Alright guys, a buddy and I moved into a new apartment and he found a cast iron pan. Since a lot of you co/ck/s have the opinion that you should consider suicide if you don't own one, I wanted to ask for tips to maintain and season your cast iron pan.

pic related, our new (20 year old) cast iron pan

Also: sticky when?

I've heard of a lot of people who do that.
The main problem is what sources you can trust.

Take /hpg/ for example. A lot of websites (the popular ones) are, according to them, a bunch of paid shills, so you're better of asking them directly. Which is what I did in this case.

The one link I found most convincing was http://sherylcanter.com/wordpress/2010/01/a-science-based-technique-for-seasoning-cast-iron/
If you can tell me this is how you do it, or if it's legit at all then that's all I asked for.

that pan looks like it already has some type of enamel coating, which means you wouldn't want to season it like regular cast iron

pic related is the closest thing I could find on google. Ours doesn't seem to shine like this one, which may depend on the lighting though.

Is there anything I still have to do to keep them in shape?

3 posts, 3 opinions.

>>6877088 seems to be right though

>>6877103 would probably fuck up the pan over a long period of time, since enamel shouldn't be seasoned the way non coated cast iron pans are

>>6877111 is half right.
It's cast iron, just coated.

sources I found are:

You need to make the magnetite to fill the pores

If you don't use flax seed oil the pan will literally supernova and humanity will come to an end

Also don't ever wash it or you will die

>> No.6877145

Why the fuck would you use someone's old pan? They could have been making semen cakes or some shit in there. Cast iron pans are like 20 bucks. Go buy one if you want one.

a bit drastic but okay
Only irrelevant for enamel, sadly.

>>6877145
because it's his parents' pan. Not from a random stranger on a flea market.
Also good cast iron pans cost a bit more than 20 bucks m8

That's definitely enameled. The speckled pattern used to be more popular, but some company still makes cheap steel pots with that look. Check any department store.

Looks like the bottom is uncoated, so mind the rust.

good to know
So basically I can (and probably should) wash it with dishwashing liquid, dry it thoroughly and then coat the inside with a bit of oil before storing it in a shelf.

Made this bad boy last night in one. Butter in the bottom, then sausage, and then onions. Cooked in the oven until onions are soft then I layer in spinich and cook until spinich has wilted down. I add goat cheese and broil until it looked like this. Ate right out of this marvelous beast and life was good.

Alright, since it'll take a while for this thread to 404 I'm just gonna use it to tell anyone interested how well the pan did.

first time use:
sauteed diced onions and ham
added noodles
mixed egg into it

All in all it tasted pretty good.
Egg took a bit of scraping to get off, but still very much possible
