Seriously, though, for a long time in the US almost all pink wine was sweet shit low class women would get drunk on at cookouts or cheap Portuguese stuff college guys would use to try to get girls out of their pants.

The affluent in America have embraced dry wine, and see rose as the perfect summertime drink much of it is. The less affluent are still stigmatized by the popularity of white zin in the 60's and 90's. Hell, they probably have a trashy older female who still drinks the stuff.

Rosé is the shortest kind of wine. Red and white cover a perfectly good spectrum and have enough variety between as well as within them that you will always have something nice to drink. Rosé is gimmicky shit for posers and twats. Ooh, look, it's pink! How unusual! That's not red or white wine!

Way to miss the point entirely. Most rose is simple and meant to be drunk young. By the time fall comes around many of last year's roses are fading in the bottle. The time to drink them is summer. They're uncomplicated, unfussy summer drinks.

Sure, every few years a different rose will become popular in the Hamptons, and suddenly you have tons of pretentious people lining up to overpay for it. Happened last decade with Domaine Ott, and more recently with Whispering Angel.

The fact that it pink and popular with rich folks doesn't change what they've known in Provence for generations. Simple, dry rose is a pretty damn good choice for drinking in the summer when you don't feel like a beer and a cocktail would be too heavy.

Growing up, my experience has been that rose is for alcoholics and little old lady brunches.
