Try Tullamore Dew 12 reserve for Irish profile.

Maybe Tamdhu 10 for Speyside.

I'm fairly confident you'll like the Tullamore, as it's still a good price for the product quality. The Tamdhu may be more a matter of personal taste... I just remember liking it more than most of the Glenlivet I've had in that price range.

Knob Creek single is standard for sippin, absolutely needs an ice cube to open up the flavors but its customizable.
Turkey Rare Breed is a pretty good blend.
Blantons is pretty plain but a lot of old timers I drink with appreciate this quality.
If you get the opportunity, find some Rogue Brewery Dead guy whiskey. It's made from the wort of Dead Guy Ale (with some tweaking) and aged for only 1 year on a boat- comes off like a burbon then goes right into scotch mode. Pleasantly different.

Scotch is a different animal I tried finding the perfect one and haven't. I just have regulars that I drink-
Glenmorangie- the holiday packaging with the different samplers in it came around and I found the La Santa variety. Its nice to have a subtle sherry aroma on top of an otherwise nice scotch. I love it after dinner or as a last drink at the table.
The other Glenmorangies were really good too.

Mix it with cola or some other soft drink, try something different next time. There's a chemical-metal-nail polish smell that I find hard to take by itself.

Local prices vary wildly, but generally Scotch starts being sippable by itself at 1.6-1.7x the price of what you paid for JW Red Label, which is around JW Black Label's price range. IMO the best bang for your buck hangs right around 2.5x the price. Definitely not cheap enough to be a daily drinker, but it tastes nice enough to celebrate with while not showing off/burning money.

I don't get how you could consider Monkey Shoulder and Teacher's in the same universe. MS is at least twice as good as Teachers. Teacher's is what a scotch would taste like if someone described it over the phone. No personality and watered down the enjoyable aspects. I hate Red Label but it might actually be better than Teacher's if it didn't taste like turpentine.

Teacher's is also two-thirds the price of MS. Different people can afford different price levels, and Teacher's is a solid pick in its "budget" bracket just like MS is a solid pick in its "budget premium" price bracket.

I wasn't trying to say they were comparable, I was just saying MS is a better buy than Glenlivet or Chivas 12 similarly to how Teacher's is a better buy than Cutty Sark or Red Label.

My favorite whiskey is undeniably the memetic peaty Islays, but they're getting expensive so I don't buy them much these days. What I've recently been pleased by is pic related. A blend, yes, but it's extremely cheap, acceptably aged, and decent quality. As the name suggests I'm sure there's Talisker in it, because it has a degree of the same sort of gingery spice and peat as Talisker, but obviously far less intense. A bottle of this is 1/3rd the cost of a Talisker 10, so for the meantime my money is going for this.

That being said, I prefer the peaty whiskies most of the time. In the affordable range the best ones (for me) are:

Highland park (12 yr)

I'm a big fan of the regular Bulleit and the 10 year cask aged. I used to work where they bottle it.

They have a limited run whiskey called Blade and Bow that came out about Derby time. After bottling that and the 10 year aged version of that, for eight hours a day, seven days a week, I very much wish that I nt only had bottles of them, but worked there still.

I miss that job, especially when they did the whiskey tasting for the employees on the clock...

Wrong.

That is what blended scotch should mean but that is not the case. Cheap blended scotch like JW Red is full of caramel coloring, cheap , non aged grain spirit (see: not barley, but corn or whatever the fuck is cheap and available) and may even contain, as another anon said, either fake oak/wood flavoring or some such bullshit to stimulate the taste of oak/actual scotch.

Of course, an actual good blend like Monkey's Shoulder does not suffer these problems.

24 and you've been dating for 9 years? Life decisions were meant to be made at 15.

401k matches while nice do not factor in for the following: mortgages, medical expenses (that are not your own), and college educations for your children. Now, if you were to max out your Roth 401k each year you could build up a decent down payment for your FIRST house since you can't pull it out without it being taxed for your second house (and then on). This all being said, the most you can pull out is 10k anyways so that's just a drop in the bucket.

No, I work for hedge funds supporting their IT. You shouldn't save your money except for 2 months salary for when you get laid off/injured/fired (one month to drink and cry and one month to find a new job). You should be investing your money in dividend paying stocks (or if you're rich enough invest in a hedge fund) so your money makes you money.

like the other anon said, Jameson's is like $25-30 in my neighborhood. I buy some lesser-known single-malt scotches at that price. Lismore and McClelland's are better than some scotch that goes for twice the price. very underrated brands, IMO. McClelland's comes in 4 varieties. I get the Speyside and the Islay.

Scotch (whisky) - typically double-distilled, often peated but not the rule. Broken up into Islay, Highland, Speyside and Lowland regional styles. Single malts, single grains and blends. Hundreds of active distilleries.

Irish (whiskey) - traditionally triple-distilled so smoother and fruitier. Rarely peated outside of the Connemara range. Single malts, single grains, single pot stills (mash of unmalted and malted barley) and blends. Only six active distilleries.

What you have there is two very similar Speysiders, Glenlivet and Glenfiddich, others may say they have more difference but when you're just getting into malt whisky there's not much to set them apart. Same story with Ardbeg and Laphroaig, two bourbon matured Islay whiskys that are both heavily peated. Talisker is sort of an inbetween, but definitely closer to the Islay style than the light Speysiders
I'd recommend the following, in this order
1-Light Speyside (Glenlivet, Glen Moray, Glenfiddich)
2-Sherry Speyside (Aberlour, Balvenie, Macallan, Glenfarclas)
3-Highland/Island Lightly Peated(Highland Park is excellent, it really is a great stepping stone to the peatier styles, Ardmore, Jura)
4 and 5-Islay, I'd recommend Lagavulin 16 for a richer smoky malt, and Ardbeg 10/Uigeadail for a lighter smoky malt (the smoke isn't lighter, the mouthfeel is). Talisker is also brilliant, a little different in style to Islay whiskys being on the Isle of Skye.
Five whiskies is certainly a reasonable amount to taste in one sitting, but remember, take your time. Noting spoils a single malt like rushing it. After it's poured, wait a few minutes before you even start nosing it, and make sure to nose and taste before adding water.
No ice.
Have water on hand to clear your palate and to soothe if the alcohol burn gets a bit much.
A good rule of thumb is to keep the whisky in your mouth one second for every year it has been aged.
That's about all I can think of off the top of my head, happy drinking mate :D

So, I was drinking some serious whisky for the first time in my life, it went like this:
Glenfarclas 12yo
Glen Moray 12yo
BenRiach 10yo
Laphroaig 10yo
some speyside aged in wine barrels, can't recall the name
Highland Park 12yo

And man, the peatiness in BenRiach and Laphroaig… Didn't expect it to be that rough. Great experience, but I can't say I liked it, even in the Highland Park, where there's just a little. Fo those who like peaty whiskey - was it love on the first sight, or did it grow on you? I'm surely gonna try it again, but it just doesn't seem like the type of whiskey you drink half of the bottle in one sitting.

Glen Moray seemed too sweet, so I liked the Glenfarclas and the unknown wine barrel aged the best.
