I haven't been through the Dakotas, but I know the rest of the Midwest reasonably well. There are good restaurants in the major cities, but they are expensive. Steakhouses are a safe bet, but an incredibly overpriced one. (in Nebraska that may be your only option). You can find decent examples of pretty much any cuisine you want in Chicago and Minneapolis if you have deep enough pockets.

Generally the local specialty junk food dishes are terrible. Skyline chili over spaghetti is dreadful, as is an Italian beef sandwich, Iowa Mexican pizza and pizza in general there.

But you can find good things. The whitefish out of Lake Superior is fantastic. Have it breaded and fried in a sandwich or smoked. You can find "coneys" in Wisconsin and Michigan, which are basically chili dogs. Trashy, but really the only way to eat the kind of chili they make there. In Detroit you can still get very good Polish food in the Hamtramck neighborhood. In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan you can find Cornish Pasties, which are god tier meat pies. And if you keep a sharp lookout you can find little joints run by Southeast Asians or Mexicans that are sometimes pretty good. In major cities there may even be a Lebanese joint (labeled "Mediterranean cuisine").

Beyond that it's all greasy bar food and bad chain restaurants, because that's what the locals seem to like.

burger time is the best fast food place exclusive to the dakotas. jl beers is a superior five guys-like in the dakotas and minneapolis. get their beer cheese dip and put it on your burger

bob's diner in sioux falls has some of the best diner food I've ever had and it's some of the cheapest I've had as well

we don't have a ton of unique food that you could get at a restaurant but chislic comes to mind. fried, but not breaded, mutton kebabs. there are tons of small places in and near tiny towns like freeman and marion that have good chislic, but I doubt anyone would want to visit a town with 1200 people for some food. botski's in sioux falls has pretty good chislic, plus overall good sports bar food. there are far too many bars that serve steak bites on toothpicks and claim it's chislic though, so watch out for that when you surely come through south dakota.

also not food related but fuck mount rushmore. don't waste your time there it's shit. the badlands and rest of the black hills are far superior. also it's tempting because of all the billboards, but skip wall drug unless you really want cheap coffee.

When I started going to the Univ of Iowa, Pancheros introduced me to big-ass Mission-style burritos. And when I started doing the usual college drinking, they were a frequent late-night treat (the one in Iowa City is open until like 3 am). I had them in Davenport before that, though - I remember my sister excitedly talking about "this place that's way better than Taco Bell" - but not burritos, just a quesadilla I think.

I moved to Connecticut and here we have Chipotle, Moe's, and Qdoba. Pancheros arrived a couple of years ago, establishing two locations. I went to one of them recently and, except for the hot salsa being a little thicker than I remembered, everything was exactly the same. Same awesome fresh-pressed tortillas, same delicious cheese, same seasoning on the meat, etc. It was like a trip back to Iowa and I loved it.

That said... objectively I don't know if I can say they're better than Chipotle. Chipotle has some good flavors to offer, though their tortillas are inferior. For now I've been going to Pancheros over Chipotle every single time, because the taste of home wins out.

Hot Harry's blows both out of the water. There's one location in the midwest so it counts! They have so much flavor with their meats.

Chipotle just happens to not be awful.

I do enjoy Pancheros, you can't beat their fresh tortillas.

If you could take Pancheros fresh tortilla combine with Hot Harry's meats and sauces, you'd have the near perfect burrito place.

Only in the real America

In flyover land (where they have to keep saying "we're actually AMERICA" because deep down everyone knows they're just a bunch of parking lots separated by monsanto-infested fields and mega churches, sort of like the nitrogen-filled core of a tennis ball that no one who looks at the tennis ball from the outside thinks, knows, or gives a shit about), vulgar displays of belligerent 'patriotism' are the mandatory two minutes hate that forms the glue that keeps society together.

There's a reason fake Americans (flyovers) have to say shit like "never forget 9/11". They actually would easily forget seeing as how, to them, it was essentially an attack on a foreign country.

lmao could you be any more mad

this will be no surprise to anyone with even half a brain, but megachurches tend to be in densely populated areas. guess what parts of the country aren't densely populated?

second, most fields don't use monsanto crops. I'm right in the middle of flyover cropland, and while I do see tags on fields saying what brand of patented seed they use, it's almost never monsanto.
http://37.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m6vh22HMZl1qcxh4do1_1280.jpg

not to mention the fact that it's the western half of the midwest that's nothing but farmland and that's also the half with almost no megachurches.

also, you should explain what you dislike about monsanto. if it's them being a shitty company, then I'll agree. it's more likely some pseudo-science bullshit about gmos, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt

Your opinion strikes me as a bit weird. Do you happen to be one of the co/ck/s that claim the Midwest shouldn't include the plains states?
>Steakhouses are a safe bet, but an incredibly overpriced one. (in Nebraska that may be your only option)
Don't understand this one, because I always die a little inside whenever I see steakhouse prices on the coast or other areas (so much more expensive than here). Is it also more expensive in the UP than the plains states?

Personally, Nebraska itself seems to be short on dedicated steakhouses. Every good restaurant will have a steak on the menu, but few specialize in it or have a wide variety (outside of chains). Mostly because anyone who knows a farmer will get their own cows butchered and eat enough steak at home that it's not necessary or fancy to go out to a steakhouse. There are definitely some around, but it's not a big thing here, and it's definitely not pricey.

Creamed cabbage, kraut, bierocks, etc. etc. etc. Not to mention the Asian cultures that have settled in groups around the midwest and utilize it. I will admit it has fallen out of favor (I think too many 50's and 60's moms tried to boil it or something), but cabbage is definitely tied to some of our largest immigrant groups.
