Does anyone else like making this easy dish? What's your favorite brand of roux?

I tried multiple japanese brands. It's all similar to me with minor differences. I don't eat enough of it back to back to notice.

I just stick with my cheaters curry.

1 can coconut milk
several scoops of curry powder to taste

super easy. cheap ($1 per can). tasty.

No. J curry is disgusting and watery. It should be called gravy at best except it's got some shit food coloring to make it yellow. It's basically disgusting.

From what people say here and other places, Vermont. It's weird that it's called Vermont.

Pic related anon, go for the mild and add your own caliente.

It's probably just tumeric. But yeah it's pretty much just curry-flavored gravy. I really don't get why /ck/ has japanese curry threads so often.

Yeah what >>6805225 said but it really depends on the type. You can shake a stick all around and not hit most of them. There's a bunch of indian ones, thai, malaysian, indonesian, jamacian, you already know about japanese gravy, and others. Within those there are types for instance thai, you have green, red, penang, jungle, etc, etc, etc.

Every time I tried to make thai curry, like the kind at the nearby restaurant, it was a dismal failure. I dumped the lot into the sink and ordered thai takeout instead.

It's basically cheap stew, so yeah. I like Golden Curry but probably because that's the only brand I can find without having to make a special trip to an asian market.

I say this all the time and I'm going to say it again.

You guys are goddamn fucking weeaboos. Japanese "curry" is weak, overpriced, and it's only fucking MSG. For a third of the price, you can get some proper Indian or Thai curry.

Fucking.

Weeaboos.

Do you really think Indian or Thai curry are comparable in anyway to Japanese curry. The taste, the ingredients, and the ways its made are completely different. All three are basically totally different foods that are only related by name and a few spices.

I bet you're one of those faggots that can't enjoy Chicago deep dish, NY pizza, and Italian pizza.

"Japanese" curry is actually British.

Do you actually make Japanese curry from scratch? I mean, I have before, it seems like a lot of effort for a very small benefit when the curry roux bricks are so good.
>>6804979
It's not watery if it's cooked well. It should be very thick, also I agree with calling it gravy, the gravy like qualities are what turned me on to it.

>> No.6807148

Fun fact:

Japanese curry was given to the Japanese by the British Royal Navy, who trained them. They in turn got it from India. It's a very mutated form of Indian curry via the Brits, still served on Japanese ships on Fridays.

Onions, potatoes, carrots and bell peppers usually.
Sometimes I'll add mushrooms, squash, or green onions if I have them.

Also, I actually enjoy okra in my curry when I can find it.

I've made it a few times and always thought the addition of potatoes along with rice on the side made it a little carb heavy. I never saw any need to add the potatoes. They do nothing for the taste.
