I really getting to the point where I see deep dish pizza as more and more of a tourist trap.

It's just that the manner of eating it isn't befitting a pizza. Don't get me wrong, they're delicious, but I don't go defending deep dish against foreigners like I do with Chicago style hot dogs or Italian beef sandwiches.

My opinion? Once you've had deep dish before, they're all pretty much the same. They're awesome, but nothing to die for

Since Detroit's got a bunch of old blacks, Mexicans, europeans, and Asians you can find a bunch of really good holes in the walls scattered throughout the city that have as close to "traditional" cultural food as you're going to get in the ghetto. Mexican town in southwest fucking kills it. Hipsters occupy the old Cass corridor and the first mile from there into the east side, so a bunch of good niche restaurants have been popping up. There's a really good smoothie and juice bar on Woodward for example.

I hate to say it but what keeps most of these ethnic places to true to their home land is their overt racism. If you're not from there or if you're not white, you're not welcome pretty much.

Before the Starlite closed down (after 60+ years) on Michigan Ave, I used to get the warmest welcome and the absolute best Polish food. Whenever blacks came in, they were rushed off. I shrugged it off until I realized, they represent and cater to their ethnicity.

Nothing wrong with that if your business can survive it. Starlite's ownership just got too old and had no one to take over. From the 1940s to the 2010s.

For the 'midwest experience' as in greasy, cheesy, but awesome, try Melt. Fuck huge grilled cheese for a great price, but made awesome.

The best pizza and submarine shops, in my experience are southwest Detroit.

I miss Texas since I've been away for a few years but I have discovered some great food here. Detroit cam make one hell of a pizza and a sub sandwich that's indescribable.
