is it a type of food or beverage?

is it something each meal should have, or even prior to a meal to make sure you can actually taste all the flavors?

A palate cleanser is generally a neutral flavored element in food that enables to clear the palate from one flavor to another; in cultures where diversity of flavors in dishes is custom, a palate cleanser is a must to companion in table.

Palate cleansers are often used between tasting wine or cheese or other strong flavors. Pickled ginger is used as a palate cleanser between sushi pieces.

Some widely used palate cleansers are sorbet, bread, apple slices, and pickles. Tart or citrus flavors are also used, such as braised pineapple or grapefruit.

pallet cleansers are people who clean off straw beds

palate cleansers are some food or smell or whatever designed to 'reset' your taste buds. generally after a particularly strong food you'd use one--like if you ate a raw onion and then wanted to try something, it would probably be influenced by the onion flavor

it can be anything that makes your mouth taste neutral. often after you eat a piece of food your mouth is coated in fluids that retain the aroma of the food you just ate. palate cleansers are supposed to 'cleanse' this. it isn't an exact science but often places do water and citrus based dishes like lemon sorbet or granita, or small salads, or yes drinks/cocktails. in japan you have pickled ginger when eating sushi.

you can have it for every meal if you want but who gives a shit honestly.
