Don't you remember that idiot kid back in elementary school who used to intentionally make noises and act out to distract the class because he has issues stemming from a bad home life? Well this is what happens when that same kid get internet, he becomes a troll. If you just ignore him he'll go away and the depression will drive him to kill himself. Hopefully, anyways.

I am Polish in America, and now that I think about this, it is true. Americans here say they like Polish food, but the only thing they ever see of Polish food is sausages and pierogi. Basically, just stuff you could make with common ingredients found in any American store. I am not sure how much Americans would like Polish food once someone breaks the news to them about pickled herring, tripe soup, hunters stew, blood sausage, etc.

Americans eat an Americanized version of every nationalities food. Just like how if you go into a McDonalds in a country outside the US the menu will be specific to that region featuring food that the people in the region are comfortable with. I find it odd that people judge the US based on the McDonalds they see in their nations when those McDonalds are nothing like what we have here.

Usually they are better.
But McDs is poor people food. So we really shouldn't judge them. Some people are just poor.

What you have is bastardized, white-American friendly versions of a select handful of dishes that may or may not have even originated in those countries, made with the safest ingredients possible in order to appeal to obese white people who will never own a passport and who think Disney World is an exotic vacation.

Anything west of the Hudson and East of the Sierra Nevada is a cultural and intellectual sewer.

There are several large ethnic communities that people outside those areas are often oblivious to. Like Somalis around Minneapolis, or Syrians and Lebanese around Dearborn MI.

Regarding the general "midwest is dull" vibe i this thread, culinary diversity/quality varies tremendously between cities in the Midwest...granted there are a lot of agrarian or forested areas with just diners and some local specialties, but there are also wealthy communities with excellent restaurants, university towns with immense variety, and populous cities with everything (obvious example: Chicago). I also disagree with OP's generalization...I'm in a midwestern town with plenty of good restaurants, but no good Greek or Amish restaurants (there are gyros-peddling diners, but the depth of their menus is minimal). Rating the broad regions of the US (thirds, or fifths, or whatever) seems pointless and arbitrary.

Exactly my point.
I am also from Europe living in America. What they consider to be German food is entirely alien to me, wholly unlike what I'm familiar with.

What they consider to be Italian food is similarly foreign to me and not at all what's eaten in Italy.

They do try to make German food, but they just fail entirely. And here's the odd thing: god forbid you ask for an all pork smoked sausage anywhere in this country. Fucking Christ, they just don't exist here unless you go to a specialist butcher who speaks only German or Polish (there are no German-speaking butchers in my area and I don't speak Polish, but I make do).
Nor veal/pork mix sausages, either.
It's all pork/chicken/turkey mix or 100% beef.

Polish food served by Europeans or someone who knows what they are doing is accurate in America, it's just that the only Polish food here is almost always the same two food. The same kind of sausage, and maybe three kinds of pierogi.

That being said, the Polish food that is produced in mass by companies here can be pretty horrible. I would never get offended by slurs, jokes, or any stupid things. But some of the foods here that are sold as Polish actually is kind of offensive, because it makes the country look bad, and it's kind of immoral to lie that something came from a certain country when it didn't. Those mass produced Polish sausages are disgusting, if someone tried to sell those in Poland, people would laugh at that.

I might be overreacting and sounding really butthurt at this point. My point is just that mass produced "Polish" sausage here is gross and there is nothing Polish about it.

lol, I should have mentioned this too
When people who grew up in Poland see "Turkey Polish Sausage", they actually laugh. The idea of it is funny, that some American Thanksgiving bird that is only served in Poland on rare occasions for parties is what "Polish" sausage is made of.

Another piece of comedy is Jalapeno Chedder Pierogi. Neither jalepeno nor chedder exist in Polish food, might as well call it Mexican food.

Sorry if I sound like a food snob, people should eat whatever they want, but claiming that this is Polish is kind of silly.

Speaking as someone who lived in Iowa for 22 years and the Pacific coast for 9 years, there's really only a noticeable cost of living increase in the actual housing market. Moving from Iowa to Washington actually resulted in almost no increase in my cost of living. There are minor things I've noticed that cost more here than they did in Iowa, but the differences are rare and marginal.

The price of houses, meanwhile, is absurd. I was looking at a place in Iowa that was $65,000 and perfectly respectable. Out here, that'd get you a literal shack.

I am in Snohomish county

There is a restuarant called Sebi's in Seattle. Owner is Polish, though it is not marketed as a Polish restaurant. However, they serve some Polish stuff. Pierogi, maybe something else.

There is also the Polish House or Polish Hall, I don't remember what they call themselves in English, you can look it up. They serve food on certain days at certain hours. Just look it up.

There is a Polish store in Seattle, I have not been there is a while, so I do not know what they have. Search Polish store, Polish deli, etc., it should come up.

Another option is to go to Russian or "European" stores. I am being completely serious. They sell a few Polish items usually. However, if you put politics aside, you will find that many Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, etc. items are just copy pastes of each other. Some people will get mad if you say that and will try to give you a history lesson, but this is not relevant for buying food. The thing is, many items have different names and you might not know the Russian equivalents, but if you really want Polish stuff, it is worth a try, and many of the items will be imported from Poland in Polish packaging and everything.

I understand m8. With European stores, you really need to know your way around. I have been shopping at Russian stores commonly for a year, and I still notice new products. It's amazing how many familiar Polish items they sell under a different name or with Cyrillic text. A lot of Polish people will refuse to believe that anything in a Cyrillic package is actually a familiar food from their own country.

It's not just pork though. Blood sausage, a common food in Poland, also seems to be non-Kosher, it is nowhere to be seen around here.

well yeah, I'm not saying we're the master race and we're perfect states because of who we are, although that's partly the case :^)

but less populated places are superior to densely populated shitholes. to me, a large city is a city with ~100k people. I can't imaging living in a city with a few million people

people claim they abandon rural areas because there are no jobs, but that's not the case. they just don't like the jobs that are here

also LA is 4 times larger than my state.

>And most of us aren't fat like you all think.
I have lived in Minnesota, Ohio, and Illinois, and yes, you are much more fat than we are on the coasts (by which I mean the real coasts not slave states next to the ocean).

I have to visit flyover a few times a year for work and almost without exception someone manages to make a comment about my supposed low body weight (I'm 5'9" and 148 pounds). It's usually meant as a compliment, but still, you people are amazing. If I had a 38 inch waist I would be considered normal, also when we go out to eat (invariably some carnist deep fried atrocity on a plate), everyone orders a disturbing amount of food and a soda (often diet, which further disturbs me).

Basically junk food is "normal food" to you people and reasonable portions are "being so healthy good for you!" A vegetable is a rare enough sight that it's worth making a special remark about, and steak is a multiple times per week affair (usually terrible quality and mechanically tenderized), rather than once a month or less.

The only thing nice about these visits is there are sometimes some different brands of beer that you can't get on the coasts, but we have plenty of good beer on the coast so it's more like a "oh wow Japanese kit kats are different flavor" kind of a deal. I'll try it if I'm there but I don't miss it if I'm not.

How much does it differ from other European stuff? Maybe if you went to a Slavic store you would see something familiar.
It can be lonely being Polish here, but the best thing I have done with my life was getting to know other Eastern Europeans and accepted their culture. Once you get past the barrier and don't think of them as strange foreigners, it's really nice. I don't like the idea of all cultures mixing together and dying out, but when already similar cultures that already overlap do a limited amount of mixing, it can preserve them.

Differs considerably.
Hungarian cuisine is nothing like its neighbouring countries' stuff. There are some similarities, sure, but it's about as similar as, say, Polish and Swedish: many of the same ingredients, several others that are found in one but not the other and what ingredients they do share aren't generally used in at all the same way.
Kinda like that.

Also, vegetables don't seem to make much a priority in surrounding countries (other than Romania) as in Hungary. There are a bunch of vegetable-centric foods that are surprisingly similar to Indian curry dishes, just with fewer spices and more herbs. One of my favourites is tökfőzelék, which is with yellow pumpkin.

And there is, of course, the matter of chillies, which aren't used in other countries in the area anywhere near as much.

Yes. Lots of places in Europe use and therefore grow chilies, but they're almost all in the south. Hungary is the farthest north where they're used extensively.
Just Hungary alone is home to about a hundred different types of chillies (not necessarily different species because it's kind of like Mexico where how a pepper is handled after picking will change what sort it is like how chipotles are the same things as jalapeños, just smoked and dried), though only about two dozen or so are in common daily use.

And yeah, I was going into the whole "Hungarians aren't Slavs" thing, but it turned into a rant so I deleted it all. Basically, being surrounded by cultures that don't speak a language even remotely related means that Hungary is culturally isolated, allowing it to keep its cuisine relatively unchanged from foreign influences.

Pic related: Downtown Minneapolis. East Villiage Grill. A Halal joint that has separate booths with curtains so there is family privacy, and they have the BEST halal goat gyro that is seasoned exceptionally. only $5 with a lb of fries! I'd actually buy one of those versus pizza or other shit any day. The real lutheran scandinavian stock (aka the reason minnesota doesn't suck) live either in MSP proper, or far outside of the cities.
