Cooked onions are fine but fuck raw tomatoes, they make your breath stink so bad for hours even if you brush your teeth, clean your tounge, mouthwash. Completely ruins the flavour of anything you eat after you got the raw onion taste in your mouth. And it gives terrible gas, absolutely fucking haram. Cooked or gtfo.

For the same reason potatoes made it. They can be kept through winter. And in hot climates, they have the advantage to stay fresh for long. They just don't spoil.
