I love goats. I raised them when I was a kid and it was the only thing that brought me joy. I am not happy with my career and thinking about taking all my marbles and starting a goat farm.
What part of the country consumes the most goat milk and meat?
Also who has the laxest laws about such things?

If your farmers market had a steady supply of goat, would you make it part of your diet?

I would be wary buying anything from a goat man.

I was just a boy when the infidels came to my village in their Blackhawk helicopters. The infidels fired at the oil fields and they lit up like the eyes of Allah. Burning oil rained down from the sky and cooked everything it touched. I could only hide myself and cry as my goats were consumed by the fiery black liquid death. In the midst of the chaos, I could swear that I heard my goats screaming for help. As quickly as they had come, the infidels were gone. It was on that day I put a jihad on them. And if you don't believe it, then you'd better kill me now, because I'll put a jihad on you, too.

If you love goats so much, having raised them from birth and becoming intimate with their personalities, possibly even anthropomorphising them and treating them like people, why would you want to slaughter them for meat and profit?

You don't treat meat animals like pets, you treat them like walking food. I love chickens. I have severally chickens I am attached to. And yet, I raise and butcher meat birds. You just make that separation mentally; you don't get attached to your food. Yes; treat them with dignity and kindness, but don't mistake them for pets.

Central Texas certainly does raise shit tons of meat goats ( and i would know since my entire family raises goats there), but it not a hot spot for actually eating the goats. I rarely ate goat growing up. But on the coasts its a different story. I live in NorCal, and every Indian restaurant, asian market and the good mexican places all have goat. Most of the ethnic restaurants serve it, like Ethiopian, a few Tapas/Spanish places, middle eastern places, etc.

If I knew someone nearby who sold goat's milk I'd probably buy some just to make goat cheese out of it. Would probably buy some meat too if the price was good.

What would you consider a good price?
Gallon of organic goat milk?
Pound of prime cut organic goat?

>> No.6728223

>>6728127
Sorry mate, I'm not an expert or anything. I'd just recon a good price would be in the same ballpark, or cheaper than the cuts in my local butcher who's had his cuts sitting in refridgeration for a while.

Sorry I can't be of more help, I don't really buy the stuff now. Just was saying I would definitely consider it should someone round me be sellin.

OP i have opened a goat farm 5 years ago. i primarily sell to french restraunts and a nudist colony butcher near me.

Before i had those clear vending lines i was struggling to find buyers. Arabic people and european people will be your primary customers americans do not buy goat at all.

To actually turn profit i had to rework myself as an organic brand and sold goat milk along with butchering the goats myself and selling parts to anyone who would buy. Expect alot of calling restraunts, create a website and post ads Everywhere.

Last year was my first year turning profit on goats. I reccomend raising chickens also so you dont go to far into the red.

You are going to need alot of space for grazing start with a small amount of goats they multiply quickly.

I do 3 week rotational cycles the life span of the worms, and i have 21 padlocks for
65 goats standing herd.

Whats going to kill your goats is worms Haemonchus contortus (barberpole worm) that causes anemia and death.

I repeat you need alot of space and avoid overcrowding if you overcrowd the primary food the goats.

Goats will always find and eat the newest and most tender growth which is new shoots of grass.

Right where the worms are. Worm eggs hatch, travel up the new blades of grass, and wait for goats to ingest them.

Fecal count every 4 weeks and cull the goats who cant handle a average worm load.

Cant you just kill the worms ?

>> No.6728447

>>6728420
It's better to select for worm resistance in your stock. After a few years of this you can have a heard that has a naturally low parasite load. Fewer parasites = healthier animals, fewer workings, fewer chemicals ingested by the goats.

>>6728362
Check out the Livestock Breed Conservency for info on Spanish Goats. This is actually a group of land races instead of a set breed, and several lines are naturally very resistant to parasites.

You have to take it easy on the worm medicine or else you'll breed super resistant worms to all medicines. It's a legit concern and you're truly fucked if you breed super worms in your pastures
