It is sort of trendy. In the sense that cute girls seem to advertise the fact that they like it along with chipotle etc. But unlike sriracha people don't put it on everything and pita pockets with hummus and salad makes a good meal. Most uses of hummus are restricted to Arab or Mediterranean fare.

But I really don't think it's cheap. It's a simple enough recipe to make at home. And costs a tenth.

Lol I didn't say that, all I said is that hipsters like to use mundane things like food to pretend they're "cultured" and interesting, which is true. If you like it go ahead and eat it but you can't deny there are lots of morons like that, and largely why certain things become trends. Years passed before I found myself in presence of hummus, and I loved that shit.

Same for cheesecake, it was virtually inexistant in France at the time, but I became obsessed with it after the episode when they receive cheesecake in the mail by mistake.

It's not always fun and games though. Such appropriation can shape people's entire view of certain cultures. I felt sort of the same way as you do with Indian food in general, considering my background, for a while, until around ten years ago or so, when the cuisine really took off among non-subcontinentals in the US. The whole "curry-eater" thing gets on your nerves and the smug way people assume your mother made you the same shitty wonderbread "naan" they ate in some bland fusion restaurant is frankly insulting. It seems that educated appropriation, the kind that leads to respectful conversation and productive cultural exchange, is not the kind people are into, at least when it comes to food.

But what do I know? Perhaps their smugness is a product of the inferiority complex they developed after dealing with the cuisine of an inherently superior race.
