People are pretentious, not beer. I used to buy ten dollar single bottle craft beers to slam at parties and wash down with liquor. I didn't walk around the house trying to get people to notice it or spit facts about hops or whatever the fuck. Buy what you want, don't act like a cock. Problem solved, infinite good beer achieved

They use far more expensive ingredients regularly, and this is ignoring beers brewed with special hops, coffee, and other schtuff. Plus the distributors, liquor stores, bars, etc. play a role. They all mark up the price because they know they can because its higher quality, people will buy higher quality especially with the rising popularity, and they also need cash themselves

Breweries don't tell stores to make absurd prices for their beer

http://www.tom-gray.com/2012/04/26/pricing-to-distributors-what-is-reasonable-markup/

These aren't exact numbers, but give a good general idea

Of course there are some breweries that probably do mark up their own highly like Rogue probably does

>> No.6691058

>>6691041
amongst american beers its basically stuff not owned by Bud, Miller, Coors or Pabst, though they won a small handful of legitimate craft brewers (like Goose Island, I wouldn't really consider 312 craft anymore personally, but most of their stuff I would)

there are a few other exceptions of smaller brewery shit beers like Yuengling, and giant kind of craft brewer Sam Adams

Amongst Euro beers its mostly just belgians and new ones from any country in the modern american craft beer image

Its not straightforward though

>> No.6691061

>>6691043
Basically we can blame the progressives for making this retarded 3 tier system where the distributor middle men exist for a significant markup on all beer, good and bad, but especially good and AB is able to get special deals with most distributors

Fucking politicians blowing it for us once again

For me craft is a pretentious term

is it? if a small brewery were to put out a rare batch of shitty corn lager would that be craft beer? it seems more like a marketing term for people who seek out less common beers and try and distinguish the different characteristics between them, and would likewise pay more

>> No.6691172

>>6691111
Sure it is a useful marketing thing but it is also a meaningful and useful term, meanwhile this whole anti-pretention thing you are talking about is straight out of a bud light commercial

It is ridiculously dumb to drink inferior beer simply because mass marketed brewers have told you people who do otherwise are pretentious. Just drink good stuff and stop worrying so much abut how you look

Also, how old are you? That attitude is a very strange one for a 20 something to have outside the deep south, craft beer is incredibly mainstream amongst 20 somethings

>> No.6691180

The term craft used to also encompass breweries that didn't use adjuncts like corn, but they've adjusted that as well to include Yuengling in their definition of craft breweries

dont get me wrong, i would say unibroue is my favorite brewery, and i love trying new beers. i just find that where i am, stuff such as founders, bells, new belgium, dogfish head, etc tends to hover around 10 per six pack. theres beers like killians, third shift, becks, etc that tend to run around 7 or 8 per 6 pack, which was what i was looking to spend tonight, and that taste better than miller lite. then theres bud, coors, etc around 5 bucks per 6 pack. not saying that microbrewed beers are pretentious, i was just pre-empting that i didnt want to spend a lot of money on an obscure beer that some anon would name drop for the sake of name dropping an obscure beer. maybe its different where you are, but those are roughly the prices where im at

pic related is my favorite beer at the moment

You want a solid 6 pack you could get anywhere? Samuel Adams. Cheap, tasty, I think it's at like a 6 percent. Anchor Steam is great if you're looking for something dryer, and a four pack of Old Rasputin for when you want a heavy, dark, sipping beer.

I think that's more or less of what they actually want people to do but officially yeah Yuengling is included because it fits under all the other terms and is a very traditional and classic brewery and the BA conceded that stuff like corn and rice are very much traditional ingredients
