Well, in general, the meat (as I've seen it, typically pork or chicken) is really moist, and the breading is flavorful, and those plus the sauce really pull the whole thing together.

It's like saying teriyaki is only good because of the sauce; the sauce is a big factor in it sure, but it's not what makes it what it is.

The East really put a lot of time and effort into even simple meals. English food can basically all be summed up as "stuff in gravy and pies" but the Japs treat cooking like a science and emphasize learning the theory on what makes food taste and look as good as possible.

Sodium, as it turns out, isn't poison. There was literature released like a year or two ago that said the USDA's recommended amount was way off and people were perfectly fine eating almost twice as much. The issues came when people at way too little sodium or WAY too much sodium, and I mean like over 10,000mg/day.

aaaand opinion discarded. if you should have learned anything from the sodium scare its that way too much politics and bad science gets injected with nutritional studies.

We get cancer because we are surrounded by carcinogens and radiation that saturate everything around us that we eat, breath, and drink from a young age coupled with the fact that we live longer and therefor have more time to develop deadly cancer.

I'll be visiting Japan in September this year, and this thread seems like as good a place to ask as any.

What kind of tips does anybody have as far as eating healthily while I'm over there? I know that it's VERY easy to eat like crap whenever you go on vacation, no matter where you go (packing lots of sweet/salty snacks, stopping at a lot of fast food places, shopping at convinience stores, etc) and I wanted to avoid this as much as I possibly can.

I'll be there for around 2 weeks and I don't want to live off of ramen, candy, fried food, and unhealthy/greasy garbage the whole time I'm over there. Will I have the odd gyoza dish or noodles just for the experience? Sure. But I want to eat mostly fresh, clean, and healthy. I love fish and vegetables, so I'm sure I'll be okay, but I figured I'd ask here for advice.

I'll be in Tokyo and Osaka mostly, with 1 or 2 days in Yokohama.

That's a shame to hear about Tokyo. I definitely don't want to be eating like junk/crap every day, like from bakeries or Yoshinoyas or fast food. But I imagine that if I'm eating in a restaurant every night it will probably get very expensive.

It's such a shame, because I am a HUGE fan of fresh fish, sashimi, seafood, and vegetables.

Don't be a boring ass tourist that is afraid to eat anywhere they haven't been before and actually try different foods.

Pretty much all the food you will eat will be healthier than in America simply because the portions are smaller, but what most people do when they come out here is because they are afraid to go anywhere where they don't 100% understand the menu they end up sticking exclusively to KFC, McD, and other fast food places with the occasional ramen / gyudon place thrown in because those usually have ticket machines

My probablem is that I'm just worried about FINDING those kinds of fresh, healthy foods in abundance. I don't WANT to fall back on fast food, tempura, ramen, and packaged snacks.

And god knows I'm not flying around the world to eat at a damn McDonalds.

It's Danboard, from Yotsuba&. It was a popular thing to do nature or still-life pictures with him in it for a while.

it's tataki and it tastes like shit. tataki is the worst way to cook anything and god knows why they use it on a meat as dangerous as chicken. I'd much rather raw katsuo or tuna than the half-seared nonsense

It's okay on beef too, particularly if paired with a citrus based sauce.

But yeah... I don't know why you'd do it with chicken. Like, it's safer here; but that texture is disgusting.

Nah. The purple one is multigrain rice, which is made of a mixture of barley, sweet black rice, and regular short grain rice. Different textural properties.

Why is Japanese bread cut so thickly? It's like all their sandwich bread is Texas toast.

I've actually always wondered as a kid why western sandwich bread was cut so thin. Having more of the bread makes it fluffier and feels more substantial when bitten into.

Thats not thick, but in the grocery they sell bread in blocks that are all the same size but with different numbers of slices. You can get up 10 slices or as few as 3.

I think its a much better system even though the loaves are smaller. You never get any heels and you aren't stuck with the same thickness like in America. Thick bread makes much better toast but in US grocery stores your only options are buying an cut loaf or buying frozen texas toast.
