What did you eat? How much did you spend?

>> No.6615783

Breakfast: toasted homemade wholemeal bread with cream cheese and jam as well as coffee with milk: about 75¢

Lunch: pasta with garlic, chili and king oyster mushroom: about $1.54 (KOMs can be kinda expensive but so good)

Dinner later tonight: bean potage with homemade flat breads and a salad with homemade vinaigrette: about 75¢

Today's projected total: about $3.04

I have a local place that sells all you can eat for $26. Last time I was there I ate about $90 worth at menu price. The fish isn't top-quality, but it's not low-quality, and it's actually sort of a fusion place, where their house-made Japanese/Mexican sauces are one of their main sells.

My local sushi place has a $20 all you can eat. At the bottom of the menu is has a disclaimer that you can order 3 rolls for the first two rounds and after that they ask that you only order 1. You can keep ordering as long as you want, but only one roll at a time.

They're all fotb so they'll really firm that if you haven't finished the roll you're trying to order another, about the rule. A lot of times, if you haven't cleaned your plate, they'll fucking flat out ignore your or just send the guy who speaks no english to refill your water who just shrugs and gives you a friendly smile. I've had to track someone down more than once to get the bill before.

The rules are pretty much the same at every all you can eat sushi place. If you order something and don't finish it then you pay regular menu price for it. There is no taking anything home. If you leave half a roll you will pay for it the whole roll at menu price on top of the all you can eat price. If you order nigiri and leave the rice you pay full price.

You can get away with leaving a piece or two, but they're pretty strict about the rules. They usually tell you how it works up front. I've actually had to eat several pieces of a gross roll before to avoid paying $13.95 for it.

Eh, I wouldn't call it the worst, but it's definitely not the best. Salmon was the only kind of sushi I'd eat at first because it looked the nicest, but once I got over myself and tried other kinds, I realized that it doesn't have to be the prettiest piece of fish to taste the best. Octopus and tuna are tied as my favorites now, but I still eat salmon because it didn't just stop being good once I found out other things were better.

Next time you look for maguro sushi, look for the top 3 grades:
1. Indo-maguro
2. mebachi-maguro
3. kuromaguro
The other grades of maguro sushis are far too cheap and they aren't as good. Ask the chef what type of maguro sushi it is if you don't know what you're getting.

For Japan that's expensive. For outside of Japan that actually sounds pretty cheap and if that's a pic of what you got, looks pretty decent too.

One thing that shits me though after living in Japan is just how fucking wrong sushi places are overseas. There's no conveyor, there's no nigiri. Every store just has a massive fucking boner for maki-zushi (sushi rolls) which, to be quite honest, isn't that popular in Japan.

Large (55g each, 50g out of shell) eggs were offered at CVS (a drugstore/chemists here in Freedomland) last week at $1.19/dz, so one costs about 12¢. Whole chickens go for 89¢/lb here and about 52% of its weight is meat, so the meat itself costs about $1.70/lb. 50g is about a ninth of a pound, so the meat cost me about 19¢. A serving of rice is about 11¢ since it's $7.99 for a 20lb sack which cooks up at least 76 servings. 11 + 19 + 12 = 42¢, plus about 1¢ for the aromatics (homemade bumbu from homegrown chilies). The cooking fat was the render from the skin from the chicken.
And now I just realised I forgot to include the cost of the shallot: about 6¢, so it wound up costing 49¢ rather than 43¢. Sorry about that.
Still cheap.

Projected meals and spending:
Breakfast: coffee with milk as well as a slice of homemade banana cake (I bake, cool, cut and freeze, then reheat in the microwave and eat), 75¢

Lunch: at work today, so forced to eat out if I don't pack a lunch, likely at the Durkadurkacart, so lamb-on-rice with Durkadurka garlic sauce, $5.
If I bring lunch, it's gonna be leftover saltfish curry with rice and some curried cabbage, about $1.

Snack: gonna be hot again today, so I'll probably have more strawberry ice from yesterday, so about 17¢

Dinner: usually have meals planned out in advance, but I'm drawing a blank on dinner altogether. When that happens, I usually have a salad. So 35¢.

Projected total for today: somewhere between $2.27 - $6.27

Update:
Only had coffee with milk at brekkie. 50¢
Sorta skipped lunch. Didn't have a meal, but I ate all the strawberry ice I made yesterday because I was so hot and felt like I needed something a little sweet. 50¢

Blitzed up some frozen cherries with powdered sugar and half-and-half to make ice cream. I'll eat some tomorrow. The whole batch, a quart/litre of ice cream, cost me about $3 to make. Cherry is the most expensive fruit ice cream to produce, I think. Or, at least, it's the most expensive I make.
The ice cream doesn't count towards today's costs since I haven't eaten it.

As for dinner, I just finished having myself that saltcod curry but I ate it with bread instead of rice because bread was on manager's special at the supermarket on my way home for 50¢/loaf. The regular price is $3.49, so I ain't complainin'. I added garlic-chives and carrot to the cabbage curry. $1, more or less.

So about $2 today. Gonna have the ice cream as dessert tomorrow.

Eggs are generally cheap around here. I've never seen them go higher than $2.99 for a dozen jumbo.

You don't know the half of it!!
When I emptied my jeans pocket from the pair I wore yesterday intending to wash them this afternoon, I glanced at the receipt from when I bought the bread.
The cashier voided the bread from the receipt.

See, the sign said 50¢ per loaf but it scanned for $3.49 all the same, yeah? Well, at the time, the till girl told me that the general manager must have put the wrong code into the PoS system and the bread was still scanning at its normal price. She said she was going to void it, but I though she was gonna put the proper price, but it turns out that theres a right-price guarantee. If an item ever scans for a price other than the one on the shelf, you get it free. I didn't notice yesterday that she didn't charge me for it. Free bread. Woot.

Dinner:
Pasta with zucchine, 53¢
I made it a little differently from my usual routine as I didn't feel like going into the basement to get a tin of tomatoes if I'm only going to use one or two of the red fuckers to cook the zukes.
I had a bottle of tomato juice in the fridge and used about a third cup of that instead of the tomatoes and —oh the serendipity!— I like it better made with tomato juice rather than tomatoes proper.

Breakfast:
Coffee with milk and cream cheese tartines with lemon curd, 82¢

Lunch:
Garlic pink fried rice (flavoured with garlic, garlic chives, chili and cilantro/coriander leaf).
Also a fried egg as well as carrot-and-bamboo stir-fry. About 58¢.
The rice is pink because of beetroot juice. Adds a surprising flavour and is a favourite preparation of fried rice. It's supposed to have a little chopped lemongrass in it, too, but I couldn't be fucked.

Snack:
A navel orange, a kiwi and a handful of grapes, about 45¢

Snack 2:
Storebought, Emmentaler-flavoured potato chips, 54¢

Dinner:
[Ham on, ham on] ham on whole wheat (all right) with cream cheese and mustard, 35¢
Also leftover curried cabbage from , but cold, as a salad, dressed with a little mustard oil and with some homemade amchur, 25¢

Yesterday's total: $2.99

Today, so far, I've only had some coffee with milk: 50¢
Actually, I'm currently having it and haven't finished it yet.

Yesterday:
Breakfast:
coffee with milk, 50¢

Lunch:
I made-and-cooked four veggie burgers. Ate two on the free bread from >>6624560‌/‌>>6620629 as sandwiches. About 48¢.
Then my basement started flooding because there was a storm and I couldn't get outside to unplug my drain to prevent said flooding. :-(

Snack:
A bowl of fresh popcorn, about 7¢

Dinner:
Another veggie burger and a huge cabbage salad (about a third of a big cabbage) with homemade vinaigrette, about 82¢

Later that night:
Peeps next door had me over for some beer (free). Never had Molson. It's okay. Had another coffee when I got in (half past midnight) because I had to stay up to unclog the drain outside and push the water in my basement down the sewer drain. :-(
Made a Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk instead of my regular type because it's WAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaay sweeter and the sugar would keep me up. I'd assume it costs about the same, so 50¢.

Yesterday's total: about $2.37

My local farmers actually pay me to accept their unique one-off custom cultivars of rare seasonal heirloom vegetables that I designed for them, with my own cooking style in mind, which doesn't have a name because I don't like to be compartmentalised or as you vulgar Americans say, "compartmentalized" [sic]. Did I mention I live in a country you've never heard of, and speak the language fluently without an accent? There are so many words for flavour ["flavor" in your vulgar American tongue] that you would not imagine the opportunities it creates to analyse ["analyze" for you vulgar Americans] the very building blocks of gastronomy.

Who the heck even "shops" these days? I suppose you drive an internal combustion engine to "the store", where all food comes from in your small, landlocked mind. The vegetables come to me, on bamboo-framed recumbent bicycles peddled by the farmer's virgin daughters, all of whom secretly expect to marry me.

WAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much yesterday and I honestly don't remember it all nor in what proportions, so let's say $10.

What I do remember having:
two bowls of honey nut cheerios with milk, coffee with milk, dried apple rings, some black licorice, another cabbage salad, some of that homemade cherry ice cream, a burger with "baby swiss" cheese, two or three hot dogs, a couple beers, some shrimp stock with ravioli stuffed with truffle, porcini and riccota and andouille meatballs in it and some chocolate. Probably even more, I don't recall.
I was just ravenous yesterday for some reason. It wasn't a "cheat day" and I don't even diet or anything. I just eat when hungry and stop when not. I was just hungry as all fuck for some reason.

So far today, though:

Breakfast:
Coffee with milk as well as a bowl of honey nut cheerios with milk, about 90¢

Lunch:
Smoked Norwegian salmon sandwich on that free bread from >>6624560‌/‌>>6622016 with Laughing-Cow-brand blue cheese spread, onion, tomato and lettuce, a tomato salad with homemade vinaigrette and some oven chips/fries. About $5.45.

No, most do not have sashimi. They all have nigiri though, which is where you can really get your money's worth. Closest I had to sashimi at the place I go to is salmon/tuna poki.

There was an Asian buffet restaurant in my area that recently closed, but they had much better than average sushi for a buffet. $14.95 included all you can eat salmon, tuna and escolar sashimi. I always ate at least a pound of sashimi. Too bad it closed. Pic related

Why would you put frozen fish at number one?
you can get fresh tuna and it doesn't legally need to be frozen most places because it's a deep water fish that is low in parasites.

Kuromaguro is classified as an endangered species by IUCN. Yes, it's delicious, but you're a huge dick if you eat it, not to mention it can be super expensive.

Mebachi is good, but also becoming overfished.

Indo-maguro is fresh frozen tuna. I was just wondering why you'd go that route when fresh unfrozen tuna is available.

You're a dick if you eat endangered species because you're directly contributing to the extinction of a species. I didn't think I'd have to spell that one out.

The price difference is really just second to the point made above. I understand paying more for a delicacy and I'm happy to do so, but not when it's harmful to the species as a whole.
