My roommate usually tries to do things the right way, so I let him use my stuff. But despite me telling him not to, he used the the green side of a sponge to wash my Shun chef knife. Now instead of gleaming and reflective, it's loaded with ugly fucking scratches everywhere. And when I scolded him for it he replied "yeah whatever man". Yes I am fucking pissed.

What do you use to wash the dishes?

Just give them a quick spit shine with your shirt. They come up fine.

One time in college my roommate brought home a box of chicken wings from his stop at a restaurant and I ate half of them and he never said anything because we had two other roommates and he couldn't prove it was me.

Also every time he put cans of soda in the fridge or anything like that that couldn't be opened and reclosed I would take one.

Showed that fucking normie.

A wash rag, like a normal person. I use a clean one every day.

what's the difference between a wash rag and a sponge? Particularly in terms of hygene.

Not that guy, but a sponge holds more water and tends to go rancid far quicker than a cloth rag
Also the rag can be washed over and over with your regular laundry, unlike the sponge which starts to break apart after a few dozen uses.
I've never felt comfortable using sponges

Thanx, but I like to properly rinse my sponge in the soapy water after doing the dishes and then rinsing it again after rinsing my dishes. It never smells but it does break up after a while though. I wouldn't feel safe washing a knife with a thin rag.

Each to his own, I guess.

Why wouldn't you feel safe? That makes no sense. The sink is right there. You're just rubbing the water and suds over the dishes. Extra absorbency is of absolutely no benefit.
