Opinions on Rowan's Creek? I saw it at my local liquor store for about $35 which is fairly cheap, and it is fairly high proof as well. I know the more expensive Willet product receive high praise, but this is apparently what they sell the most of. Anybody had it?

>> No.6552232

>>6552209
Its unfortunate but it seems to be an across the board issue in the whisky industry. Old stock is being depleted so distillers are needing to bottle younger whisky to keep up with demand. This is why I'm suspicious of the proliferation of non-age statement whisky in the world of single malt scotch, seems like it often just means young whisky with a particular cask finish or something.

>> No.6552974

>>6552232
This. Whiskey takes a LONG time to make generally, but the demand has grown sharply in the last several years, and supply can't keep up. So in order to get what they can out of the situation, distillers are watering their products down and/or releasing them way younger than they used to.

Hopefully some distillers will catch up with the demand soon but a lot won't bother because it's cheaper and thus more profitable to just sell younger, weaker whiskey for the same money.

Jack Daniels Honey is not delicious. I bought it hoping it would be like a refreshing distilled mead and instead I got this disgusting honey flavored HFCS snot.

This is fucking garbage, I have tried so hard to enjoy it.

It tastes like slightly smokey red label. Also, don't breath out your nose after having a taste, you will get that same smell you get after you vomit.

I should have known it would be shit, they released it after Johnny Walker bought them out.

That's what you get for getting something without an age statement. If they don't want to state the age, it's because it's so low that if you knew, you wouldn't want to buy it because you'd know it probably isn't ready. As a result you get something harsh and less flavorful. There are exceptions, such as Ardbeg's Uigedal, but as a general rule don't buy it if you don't know how old it is.

At least for scotch. A lot of bourbon goes without age statements, but because bourbon is aged in new casks (and usually in a warmer climate than scotland) it gets a shitload of cask influence in a shorter time.

I don't give a shitting dick about jack daniels, but if it is distilled grain spirit aged in oak casks for 3 years or whatever, is it not by definition whisky?

Blended malt is nice, and is not nearly as much of a shit rip-off as blended scotch. Johnnie Walkers except Green Label, Dewars, Cutty Sark, Famous Grouse, among others all dilute their malt with grain vodka to reduce costs and strong flavor.
