The problem around the anti-GMO movement is that it's two different groups talking about two different things who get confused and lumped together.

One group is anti-GMO because they don't like the idea of scientists "playing God" and creating "frankenstein food". These people are silly, and should be laughed at.

The other group is anti-GMO because a large part of the GMO business is creating sterile, herbicide/pesticide resistant plants; this means that farmers become dependent on these companies for their seed. They also get to indiscriminately dump gallons of chemicals all over their crops. There's also a question mark over how "sterile" many of these plants really are (given that, you know, plant genes tend to mutate) and that the resistance could be passed on to native plants.

The last group have some genuine concerns which is largely rooted in science.

>> No.6546673

>>6546624
>There's also a question mark over how "sterile" many of these plants really are (given that, you know, plant genes tend to mutate) and that the resistance could be passed on to native plants
There isn't a question, they're not sterile at all and it's disastrous so far. Mexico had to ban gm corn before they lost all of their native varieties instead of just most. The companies marketing these things have no issue with them not being sterile. Contamination only benefits them because they can sue for copyright and get away with it. There was even a non-sterile gm tree approved recently, even though it had been said before that there would be no approval before sterility could be ensured. Expect forests across the country to become irreparably contaminated in short order.

>they don't like the idea of scientists "playing God"
If the root of this concern is that humans don't really know shit about how nature works and will inevitably fuck up the environment we depend on for profit, it's not a bad fear. The backlash against "religious hysteria" is to turn "science", as if it was a thing and not a process, into a religion, which encourages hubris and carelessness that may very well be the demise of us all.
