Not a whole lot of difference, the only real advantage to the press is that it cooks the entire thing evenly because both sides are heated, and it's slightly less effort than holding it down with a spatula. For like...20-30$, it's fine. Especially if you make tons of grilled sandwiches.

It's not rally the same as grilling a sandwich and pressing it down with a spatula at all.

The thing is that both sides are heated, and the top part is also really heavy, so it presses down while it grills from both sides.

As much as I like a panini, heating two cast iron skillets and putting a buttered sandwich between them will accomplish the same thing.

It's really just a matter of squishing the sandwich while grilling it form both sides.
