Hey fellows, sorry in advance if this a stupid question.

I rewatched the Lord of the Rings trilogy a few days ago and there's been something I've wanted to know... What kind of meat is Gimli talking about when he says "red meat, right off the bone!"?

Well, more like which dish. At first I thought he may be referencing pork ribs, but then I really started to use my noggin. Maybe some kind of beef? I ask because I'd like to recreate it, but I need to know what it is (or what anyone thinks it is).

Anyone have the faintest idea? I'm thinking he means it falls off the bone, so it's something smoked. Or maybe it's just you eat it off the bone, but that would mean it'd have to be pretty tender.

red meat means...well, red meat http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_meat

right off the bone presumably means it isn't removed from the bone prior to serving. like ribs, t-bone steak, etc

A leg of something. Roast lamb legs are common outside of Middle Earth.

>> No.6512966

Probably a pork leg.

Why are you even asking?

I think what you're looking for, OP, is something like corn beef. When we do corn beef and cabbage, it's slow cooked for hours until it literally falls apart at the slightest touch. I recommend Roast Lamb legs that were suggested and slow cook the shit out of them. When the meat is barely hanging on the bone, they're done. At least, that's what I think when I remember him saying that.

What the fuck am I looking at? Tolkien went into a lot of detail about what the Hobbits ate, which was all English food that has been eaten there for centuries.

What the hell is the crap in that picture?

But that's nothing to do with Middle Earth, which Tolkien wrote as using British meals. He wrote out long lists of everything they all ate in great detail.

Since Bavarians are the mointain niggers of Germany, he must be talking about Bavarian Schweinshaxe.
