So my roommate decided that while I was away from the apartment for a while on a trip that it would be a great idea to leave my cast iron skillet soaking in water to clean it.

I come back and it has been hella rusted.

Does anyone know any good recipes for human flesh because I might just murder this asshole if my pan is permanently damaged.

If I can fix it and not have to bludgeon him to death with it, I guess we can laugh at other peoples' shitty roommates, too. Beats going to prison, I guess.

This. It works surprisingly well. Use one of those plastic scrubbing pad things, or a scotchbrite pad. Once the rust is gone, (rinse with water and repeat salt/oil as needed.) season again and it'll be good as new.

your just going to have scrub it with steel wool or even fine sandpaper untill you have metal showing again.
you will also need to remove the old seasoning so you can start fresh
oven cleaner if you have to but use anything to get a new surface
re-season untill its good again

Even if you rescue it it'll take weeks to restore it to anything close to it's seasoned glory. It's a lodge, why bother? Buy a new one for 20 bucks. If it was something rare I'd suggest spending a day sanding out the rust and another day seasoning it.

Baking soda and vinegar.

All you're seeing is iron oxide, ie byproduct of oxidation. Scrub it a bit, maybe use some steel / copper wool, it won't be right for a while, but through use it'll eventually return to what it once was, and it'll get some sort of coating back to where it won't immediately re-rust.

It's just rust.

lol only if it cracks

I used to browse antique stores and buy the shittiest-looking mega rusty cast iron skillets and pots for like $5 or less. Then just pop them in a 5 gallon bucket of water and baking soda with a car battery charger and a piece of sheet metal. They'd drop all the rust, come out sooty black then I shine them up to a polish and season them until they looked like midnight pools of blackness. Super easy to do.

There was a series of threads a while back by an anon documenting the cleaning and seasoning of old cast iron skillets like yours. There were multiple threads with almost all the posts being his, and he took pictures with all the posts in his steps, and goes into great detail on what he does in the step with which cleanser, etc etc.

I'm not sure if /ck/ has an archive, but I'd look for those threads. That anon was dedicated.

The absolute easiest way to strip a cast iron pan is to use your oven's cleaning cycle (assuming it has one). I did 4 pans not long ago that were old and crusty and rusty as shit that I bought at thrift stores and barn sales. They come out completely stripped, and then you can reseason from scratch to perfection. The only thing about that method is that you need to have all your windows open (and maybe your door too, because it will smell and smoke a bit at first. But it's hands down the easiest way.

Don't freak out OP
Cast iron doesn't have a coating, so you can just Abraid it down.

Salt and oil, bicarb and a scourer
That just takes time

Just make sure you seal the pores of the metal afterwards
Heat the pan, then add oil
Leave it to cool, then repeat

Yeah, I agree with this. But who says OP didn't do that? Sometimes people just give no fucks about other peoples shit.

I've had two shitty roommates ruin nonstick even though I told them to their faces only to use plastic utensils. One let her buddies into the kitchen to use all our shit, didn't warn them. The second ruined a rice cooker by using a fucking fork to fluff their rice inside it, (burnt the rice too) even though I fucking demonstrated changing containers and then fluffing. Second bitch also ruined another nonstick pan doing god knows what. Told me she 'didn't know how those stains had gotten on' it. Stains? They were scratch marks. I told her ask much. Asked her is she'd used a fork or some shit in it. Ignored. She replied telling me she'd soaked it and tried to get it out, but it wouldn't come up, must be not nonstick.

It just occurred to me... None of my roommates have ever used my nonstick because I am so anal. Second bitch actually did say I was such a dick about conveying how to take care of my stuff that she didn't wanna use it. Hahahaha, didn't stop her.

Put it in the oven on self clean, the scrub the fuck out of it with foil and salt.

Or if it's really bad spray it with oven cleaner, stick it in a black trash bag and let it sit outside in the sun for a day then scrub it off and reseason.

Unless it's cracked you haven't hurt cast iron.

>> No.6467611

Well I must say, I'm done with mine. I'm tired of rubbing it so many times and so long, I've tried salt, vinegar and sodium bicarbonate, lemon juice and whatnot, I've never managed to season it and clean it.

Food always had metal flavor and the skillet was fucking heavy. I've learned that some like mine were made even heavier so as not to warp/buckle on a fire that is not gas, like induction and such.

I just removed rust, hid it in a cupboard and then came here to complain.

I don't even bother seasoning mine anymore whenever i fuck up and burn off the seasoning.

I just cook with it them put a light coat of oil on it to keep it from rusting between uses. I heat it up and wipe it out with a damp paper towel before using it again. Eventually the seasoning comes back from normal use.
