Who am I kidding though. Whenever I start any drug, I don't stop until it's unpleasant or worse. I know I'm "there", but I gotta get more there. I don't know where you are living, but have you ever tried some bavarian beer? The beer you posted is something you'll find in Cologne, in my opinion average bavarian beer is by far the best to come out of germany. If you can buy it, try out Augustiner some time (from munich).

Not him -- I agree though. If you like malty beers, Augustiner is great.

I prefer hoppy beers, however -- I usually go with Jever as it's very easy to find. Or I go with Czech beers, which are a bit more hopped.

There's no real bad quality German beers -- some are of excellent quality. It just comes down to personal preference -- there is, however, a bit of a lack of diversity.

totally agree. I am one of the lucky guys having a store offering Augustiner right in my town (which is nothing special since I'm living in suburban munich), but I know it is hard to get if you are living in different places since the Brewery refuses to expand.
And czech beer is also great, I love Velkopopicky Kozel and czech Budweiser.

I'm an expat living in Berlin. I've never actualy seen Velkopopicky Kozel, but I'll definitely keep an eye out for it. Czech Budweiser is just a lovely, well-balanced lager for a hot day, Pilsner Urquell is probably even better in some ways, although they are both great beers.

Augustiner really took off in Berlin. The hipsters love it -- I know we all like to criticise them, however if it means smaller brewers getting a bit more attention than the mega-brews, I'm happy with that. It's also nice to see some craft brews popping up around Berlin -- it's a vastly different scene from even two years ago.

Yepp, I also like Urquell, but it is somehow difficult to get here. Budweiser can be found in every shop.

Augustiner isn't exactly a small brewery, if all the hipsters knew how many people around munich are drinking it, they wouldn't drink it anymore. But it is a lot more likeable than the other big brewerys in munich.

If you are up for something special, I can recommend some very small brewerys from Bamberg, especially Brauerei Spezial. I don't know if you have ever heard of Rauchbier (simply smoked beer), it's something very special and it tastes like something very special, but it's a nice variety to "normal" beer. Since you said that all german beers are somehow the same, you might be interested

>> No.6466916

My man -- one of the first beers I went in search for once I moved to Berlin was Schlenkerla Rauchbier. An amazing experience, comparable to no other beer. Maybe an Islay malt or something.

It's a shame it's not a more popular style. I'd also like to see Berliner Weisse become more popular. I actually drink it without syrup from time to time -- I'm not a fan of it with syrup. It can be a welcome change, albeit not a sessionable drink.

>> No.6466944

>>6466916

Yeah, the only comparable thing I can imagine at the moment is Laphroaig. But most people I know don't like it, they can't get into something as special as Rauchbier.

Berliner Weisse is something I know from stores, but it always comes with some taste (elder or woodruff), so I've never noticed it as a serious kind of beer, if we want Weißbier in munich, we've got enough options (Franziskaner rules!). Going to try to get it without lemonade taste now, though.

Just buy beers with cool looking labels. I've found some real good ones that way.

Then try them and figure out which you like best and figure out what style they are.

Other than that, try:

Sierra Nevada IPA. Most popular IPA in America. Pretty decent. Green label.

Guinness in a can, or Murphy's in a can.

Blue Moon, not the best example of the style but the only one you can reliably get anywhere.

Magic Hat #9, a pretty bad beer craftsmanshipwise but you wont care aout that to begin with.

Trader Joe's Vintage Ale is brewed by Ommegang, one of the best brewers of big beers around. I think its out of season though so try Ommegang's La Fin du Mond.

Find a local small brewery and see if they do tours, many of them do and theyll help you out

There's no reason to limit yourself to shit like Magic Hat and Maker's, *if* there are good alternatives. It's considered "entry level" because it's common and heavily advertised, so it's a gateway for people who never had "the good stuff" before. Not because you need to develop your palate drinking bland garbage.

Not saying you have to force yourself to try Cunt Destroyer Naga Jholokia DIPA or Potrero 18th Century, just that it's say MH#9 vs Bell's Oberon, or Maker's vs Black Maple Hill, don't go for the "entry level" just because you're afraid you won't appreciate the better stuff. The best way to develop a palate is to drink *good quality drinks*, not to suffer through Level 1 because you confused drinking for Super Mario Bros or whatever the kids are playing these days on your Intendoes.

Well I like Makers....granted I haven't really tried better bourbon, I'm still really new to this stuff. But at the same time more complex flavors are obviously more rewarding for some but can be...bad for others. Like me personally, i don't like heavy peat or smoke in single malts or even blended scotch. It just tastes like cigars to me, but others enjoy that.
I imagine the same holds true for bourbon, more exotic and stringent flavors come out the longer it has been aging. It's a great thing for some but sometimes those flavors can be a little much for a noob

>> No.6469837

> But at the same time more complex flavors are obviously more rewarding for some but can be...bad for others. Like me personally, i don't like heavy peat or smoke in single malts or even blended scotch.
I am curious which peated malts you've had, because the older the stuff sits in the barrel the better integrated the flavors should be. For instance Talisker 10 is arguably an acquired taste (although I love the stuff), whereas I can't imagine anyone (who finds strong liquor palatable to begin with) could possibly object to Talisker 30. Likewise blends, the only reasonably common blended scotch with overt peat is the Compass Box Peat Monster which is perfectly fine but not anywhere near as well integrated as even something as pedestrian as Laga 16. If you've had Laphroaig 10 or Ardbeg 10 I can understand your reaction.
>I imagine the same holds true for bourbon, more exotic and stringent flavors come out the longer it has been aging
Not at all, everything mellows with age. I would in fact consider Maker's to be unmellow because the only thing you're tasting is vanilla from the oak chips. What will make a bourbon (or really any american whisky) taste more aggressive on the palate are three things chiefly: (1) ABV (this is required to be labeled), (2) high rye content (this is usually mentioned), and (3) pot still distillation (they usually say this). But it's all in the implementation and how you serve it. High octane stuff like Booker's can be diluted a little bit. Rye mellows with age. If you're sticking with barley, wheat, and corn, and taking note of the alcohol content before you sip, you should be safe from noob-unfriendly sensations.

>raspberry wheat beer: not much raspberry flavour, 'bits' in the liquid

>bud light: hard t get in this country, really wanted to try americas fave beer, tasted like fizzy water with metal
>manuka honey beer: not much honey flavour
>leffe blonde: a lot of 'froth' but it tasted alright
>coopers sparkling ale: this was nice and sparkline, but again there were 'bits' in the bottlee
>tequila beer: taste gross
>kingfisher strong: my usual drink, taste gross like corn syrup and metal, but it is strong and get's me cheap for cheap
>godfather beer: for when I'm on a budget and can't afford kingfisher

Pic related with coke.

Gonna ask for advice in this thread.

So far I've tried the following, a plus sign is a like, an asterisk is a "better but still not there" and a "-" means I only like it if I have nothing else.

-Cheap blends. DYC, J&B, Ballantines, you know the drill.
+Four Roses (Regular)
+Jim Bean (Regular)
*Chivas 12
+Jack Daniels (Regular)

As you can see, I'm leaning towards the burguer spectrum.

I'll explain: I wanted to try something nice for a change, and I picked up this here bottle of Chivas, since it was readily available and never wanted to be bothered with ordering. Well, I am disappointed, it's objectively better than any other whisky I had drank, but it certainly isn't wowing me, I expected something new, yet it is same old thing but a bit better (don't be silly, of course I tried it neat).

So here's my inquiry.

Should I bother picking up either a bottle of JWalker Black Label (seen praise for it and it's said to be the step before single malts for newbies) or even already a single malt?

Should I abandon this scotch idea and aim for americlap nectar?

In any case, I'd love to see your suggestions since, as I said, Chivas didn't really quite cut it.

You liked Jack Daniels more than Ballantine's?
interesting...
The fact that you give all bourbons you've tried a + mark means you should probably stick with them for now. I think I'm a bourbon guy too honestly, although I really enjoy any good tasting whisky.
Look at ralfy reviews on youtube he has a ton of recommendations for cheaper single malts that you can try.
Also maybe try some new blends. I had Royal Salute and while it didn't "WOW" me, it was very pleasant with a lovely aftertaste. Not saying you need to go expensive...but maybe there's some blends like that cheap or even better.

Madeira is easily my favorite fortified wine. Such great flavor, especially when it's old. My granddad got a bottle of 50+ year old bual madeira for his 75th birthday and gave me a glass, it was completely mind blowing. Oldest I've had otherwise is about 30.

Currently drinking some pic related. Label makes it look a bit shit but it's really excellent- a wild yeast saison aged in botrytized wine barrels.

I got a bottle of this for $9 at bevmo. I've had it before and it's always on sale for around $10 (the regular price is listed as $16). The tag in the store said it's aged 3 years but the bottle doesn't say anything other than that it's a blend. I had a glass neat while I had a 500mL bottle of "premium" ginger ale in the freezer. This scotch is rough neat but I didn't mind it when I had it with ice or water. This second glass is about half ginger ale and it's much better.

I usually down bottle after bottle of craft beer but it makes me feel fat and hate myself. On Friday after my grandmother's funeral I stayed at her house and my family members and I all went through the things there to pick out whatever we wanted before the estate sale. I found a coppy of A Farewell to Arms from the 50s that probably belonged to my uncle who killed himself in 2002 when I was 12 and it had a bunch of notes it it. I read about 80 pages yesterday and it made me just want to drink liquor. I almost got an $18 pint of grappa. I could have even gone for some cognac. I have a nice wad in my wallet right now, I could have got some nice shit but I really felt like subjecting myself to cheap dirty booze.

Heineken isn't even good for the money, though. For me, it's skunked 50% of the time, and for the price (generally ~$10/six pack), I can get virtually any craft beer in the store. I can typically get a genuinely good import for maybe a dollar more. Same guy here. I have Grapefruit League by Muskoka tonight, along with a Flying Monkey Smashbomb sixer and six Rochefort 8's, one of my personal favourite Trappist ales (though 10 is amazing). I also have a doppelbock that I will hceck the label on later as well as pic related, Trois Mousquetaires makes amazing beer and their barleywine with an "unreasonable" amount of hops is awesome as well as their Baltic Porter. This Hopfenweisse is no different. Anyone with access to their doppelbock or other beers let me know. I will pay good money for them.

Hoegaarden is a better wheat beer than Blue moon. If lightening strikes and for some reason they're in Kansas, Ommegang Witte and Southampton Double White are great examples of the style.

I get touch more sour from Hoegaarden. It tastes to me like Hoegaarden is an actual wheat beer if nothing special, and Blue Moon isn't sure what it wants to be. On an unrelated note, why am I telling google what is and isnt food?

I'm almost done with a bomber of Lagunitas Equinox. It tastes good but it's not amazing and I wouldn't buy it again because I like other Lagunitas stuff better. I got it because I'd never noticed it in a store before and this semester I've been trying to drink every Lagunitas variety I can find. I was starving when I cracked open this bottle so I feel pretty damn good from this beer already.

I have a bottle of Quail Oak merlot that I paid $2.76 for to drink after this.

Your is possessive (pronoun).
You're is a contraction for "you are".

Don't complain. Don't justify. Don't post back. Just accept it, learn it, and move on. It will become natural and automatic.

I'm not that much of a hipster, but it's a brand new brewery. I'm blessed with living 5 minutes from an awesome beer store.
Had a pale ale and an IPA from the same brewery, the former was ok and the later very satisfactory.

Here's a beer i really like, to make up for my faggoty post.
