Why is crab meat so good? Why is it so sweet?

I went to a vegas buffet 2 days ago (im home in LA now) and I ate about 400 dollars worth of crab at a premire 55 dollar buffet.

some chinese fucker even too my picture. i'm 6'1" and am 310 lbs, but I lost 20 pounds in the last 2 months. when i got back to my room I had fucking strechmarks, I kid you not.

I couldn't find king crab, but the seafood buffet at the rio was good. I got to the crab and the bucket was empy. I picked though it then WHAM the new bucket showed up and I grabbed half of it right there. my gf was 4 people behind me so she got a few plates for me, the angel.

That said crab meat is indeed fucking delicious and I would eat it constantly if it wasn't so expensive.

also there were 100lb nips eating just as greedily, we were just the garbage dump pile.

the crab cooked here was PERFECT- it cracked, snapped, and poped, the shells were hard enough that i could actually crack them with my hands and pull out the meat.

at MY local 'vegas buffet' (in torrance, thats what its called) the all you can eat crab legs are soft, so when you try to break them, they just sort of bend. you don't need crackers, you need a knife.


these were the best, biggest clusters of crab i've had at a buffet.

my dad worked in alaska in the early 90s. he sent home boxes of real king crab that was the best, before anyone could order them online. they were as big as my arm, when i was a kid. now my forearms are as big as peoples calves.

Do you know of any good Asian buffets (which are the closest we can get to Vegas) in Los Angeles? I only know of Hokkaido on Westwood and Pico, which is pretty decent. Vegas Buffet on Hollywood Blvd is overpriced for what it offers.

You only tip for drinks at a buffet, because you get your own food. Cheap buffets/dining lounges with free food at casinos, $3-5 is a decent tip if you're at a table for two. At more expensive places, $10 sounds about right.

I'm with you OP. Crab meat is good as fuck. Pic related, went to L'auberge du Lac in Lake Charles, LA and they had all you can eat crab buffet (king, snow and stone crab).

Timed it just right so we arrived just at the end of breakfast and paid the breakfast buffet price of $14.99. As we were seated they start changing to the dinner buffet and bringing out the crab. Everyone coming in after us paid $49.99

When someone says "I ate $100 worth of [food] at a buffet", they mean it would have cost roughly $100 to order a la carte off the menu of a comparable non-buffet place. That doesn't mean that the restaurant paid anywhere near $100 for the food. Wholesale food pricing is nothing like what a consumer pays at a grocery store, let alone a restaurant.

More importantly, profitability from one customer to the next is variable, even when service is portion controlled. Being successful (or not) in the restaurant business is about hitting an average that makes the restaurant profitable. Buffets are no different. >>6437336 actually explains it pretty well, all-you-can-eat places can afford to take it in the shorts from some of their customers. On the whole, proper pricing and menu engineering will ensure that they make money. (all-you-can-eat service is itself a menu engineering technique)

The other thing about buffets is that the self-service approach requires MUCH less labor expense per customer than a restaurant with full table service. With less personnel overhead, they can afford to spend a little bit more on food.

Buffets manage to exist even in flyover country where most of the locals are poor fat fucks. A place that's managed properly is not at the mercy of customers' appetites. The stereotypical Chinese buffet owner yells at fat diners because he's a greedy chink, not because they actually represent a threat to his business.
