Can we get a tea thread?

I'm going to get some real tea, at last. The best I've taste so far was some mid-tier jasmin tea (chung hao) and some blend oolong shits.

I wanted to get several cheap teas to get an overview. What do you think of this? What should I get else?

I tried to cover all types of teas:
Yumman De Mai
Ping Cha (Long Jing is too expensive for the moment, I don't even have proper tea dishes for this kind of tea)
Bai Mu Dan
Ooolng Fu Liam
Lapsang Souchang

I'm just getting into tea, myself. I picked up some tea blends at a store in the mountains. The first I plan to try is a mix of japanese sencha and chinese dragonwell. The next is india green tea blended with dried mango. The third doesn't even contain tea leaves but is a mix of apple pieces, cranberries, and hibiscus flowers.

Get some pu' erh tea. Its the shit, but it can be on the more expensive side if youre buying high quality.

Cheapest is an imperial (aka noname) pu'erh from Yunnan. http://www.palaisdesthes.com/fr/pu-erh-imperial-174.html

Is it shit or cheap pu'erh is still pu'erh?

I use an electric kettle and a simple little pot with an infuser.

Just avoid Teavana, they charge way too much for basic shit.

>gunpowder green
I didn't included gunpowder because it's already one of my favorite tea and it just became natural to refill my gunpowder box.

Tea ball is a good start. Then the next step any teapot with a metal basket. And the god tier is the glass basket like this http://chinalifeweb.com/shop/product/cl-glset2/200/ or this http://chinalifeweb.com/shop/product/tea-brewer-decanter/200/..

You should care, first about the tea you buy, then temperature/time and then space you leave to your tea. (large basket > tea ball).

i dont have an electric kettle or an infuser and i dont want to buy one and then turn out to not like tea, ya know?

i have steel pots i can boil water-- what else can i use?

>> No.6437716

Well, the electric kettle is convenient to control the water temperature but you can heat water with anything really even a saucepan it doesn't matter. Just avoid microwave, there isn't any proof that it's bad, but it's just stupid.

Then you can poor your hot water in a teapot or directly in your mug/cup with a tea ball, a basket or anything. Again, it doesn't matter. Only matter, tea, temperature, time to brew and space.

One solution is to just put your tea in your cup without any basket add hot water, and drink it with the tea still in there. It's a bit shit because your tea will brew for too much time, but it's still works and it's a start.

Oh I forgot. The quantity of tea you put is also very important. 2g per cup, but you can add more if you brew for much less time.

You can easily find charts online to help you with temperatures and time.

i am reading the temperature and time requirements now. will my water being too hot totally ruin it? i mean i can do it *right* later, if i decide i even like tea, but for now i just want a quick and dirty way to try it out for myself without investing all the equipment and precision. i can probably get a metal ball at my local walmart and i have mugs galore. boiling water okay to sample?

I like juhua/chrysanthemum tea; anyone else?

>will my water being too hot totally ruin it?

Green/white tea gets bitter when the water is boiling/too hot and/or you steep it too long (try ~3 mins). I usually boil water and let it sit for 10 minutes before dunking my green in. Black tea is best with boiling water.
