I'm thinking of getting a deep fryer so I can expand the amount of things I can cook. Tell me about your experiences with them. What oil do you use? What do you like to cook in it?

Well I don't have one at home but I use one at work and we use canola oil. When I've fried shit at home I use peanut oil.

But anyway at work we fry calamari strips, breaded prawns, breaded mushrooms, breaded artichokes, breaded ravioli, french fries/sweet potato fries, fresh calamari rings and uhh tentacles I guess, tortilla chips or strips, wonton wrapper strips

I feel like there's something I'm forgetting. Oh well. Anyway you can bread just about anything and fry it.

I only use a deepfryer if I'm making a large batch of something. Otherwise it's simpler and easier just to deep fry in a pot on the stove.
In fact I haven't even used my deepfryer in over 5 years.

If you are someone who wants to experiment with food at home, then they are worthwhile. There are a lot of things you can make using a deep fryer and occasionally there isn't another option. However, if you don't really spend much time making 'fancy' food at home, you could just potentially end up deep frying everything you cook for simplicity and deliciousness in which case you will probably just get fat

>> No.6409347

I just use a big pot and poor a shot load of oil into it. I've had deep fryers an it works exactly the same. Just get a thingie that won't melt when removing the good from the pot

Peanut oil is best oil. You can get it really hot without causing a grease fire, and it leaves a subtle pleasant flavor imo. It is relatively expensive but I think its worth it, peanut oil is best frying oil.

I used to own a deep fryer but I don't use it anymore. It's good for temperature control but you can use a cast iron pan and fry thermometer.

The problem with the deep fryer is that it's petty hard to clean. You can reuse the oil a bunch of times but when it finally comes time to clean the thing it'll take a solid half hour and will be throughly disgusting.

Isn't that kind of a waste of oil though? Filling the pot enough to deep fry and then having to dump that oil to use the pot again? Or do you just leave said pot with oil sitting on your counter?

I used a deep fryer once.
Didn't read the lid instructions.
The oil over flowed, it never worked again...
Now I just fry in a pot.

I'm guessing that most people reuse the oil, but do you just leave it in the fryer? Wouldn't you have to strain the crumbs and shit out of it everytime you cook and store it properly? Are there health risks with reusing the oil like that?

Deep fried Mars bars. I have at least 4 per week. You get really good results if you get your bars and batter them all at once then either freeze them or put them in the fridge for a day to two before frying.

i use a plastic container that came with some fancy ass ice cream i once bought. i let the oil cool then embed a paper towel (some cloth would work better i imagine but i just use this) over the container's opening, then pour the oil to strain. it takes like 10 minutes to do since the oil saturates the towel so quickly but it's worth it to me. it's pretty safe to reuse and depending on what you're frying you can do it indefinitely. here's a good article on the subject though:

I had a dumb ass for a roommate who heard about deep fried Twinkies so he went out and go some Snowballs and tried to fry them. He didn't try to coat them with anything just dropped them into the oil.

I use a wok with strainer ladle. My oil of choice is either veg/sunflower seed oil with a dash of sesame for flavour.

I usually use them for chips/wedges/onion rings but also for karaage, tonkatsu and donuts
