What are /ck/'s thoughts?

I was surprised to see Publix and Fresh Market so high in the produce and meat ratings as they have always been mediocre at best for me. The bakery and service is good though.

Wegman's at No. 1 seems about right.

No, they just published the preferences of soccer moms and woman with secretary butt who aren't secretaries. They merely published what their readers like/dislike and their readership is mostly soccer moms and women with secretary butt. As we all know, soccer mom's and women with secretary butt can't cook for shit, so of course they're going to pick the stores with the tastier ready meals.

>>6406552
I think publishing the preferences of soccer moms is a fuckstupid move. Those bitches don't cook. They're too busy helicoptering their children and drinking wine with the other soccer moms to actually cook anything. You can't judge a store's meat quality simply by the quality of the mince and the boneless, skinless chicken breasts, which together make up about 90% of the meat purchases of these culinarily stunted cunts.

Hy-Vee sucks ass. I was just there yesterday looking for an onion. ONE FUCKING ONION. They were all rotten. The white ones were covered in some black spotty shit. The red and yellow ones were all shriveled, and kept popping out of my hand due to their skin falling off. I've even seen onions there that were fucking sprouting.

The rest of their produce is hit-or-miss. Their potatoes go bad after about a week. The greens are usually wilted. The ginger is sometimes soggy for some inexplicable reason. The seafood is always rancid. I have to hold my breath when I walk past that counter.

The goddamn Wal-Mart has better produce.

Of the two nearest me, one is great for produce and seafood, the other for uncommon cuts of meat and uncommon produce (Asian/African-heavy area).

Of the two further away, one carries a huge number of Polish and Puerto Rican things since its smack dab in the middle of a PR area and a Polish one and the other is just general white American (and is the worst of the bunch for some reason).

All of them are surprisingly good for cheese, both domestic and imported.

Well they use to be synonymous with lower class K-Mart and Walmart, but did try to rehab their "cheap" image around the 1999/2000 period with a huge TV ad campaign. I'd say their image did go up perception-wise among middle class and younger shoppers. Sure they aren't Nordstorm or Macy's, but I wasn't comparing them to those stores.

I don't know what sort of cooking you do, but the produce (save the onions) aren't bad. 49¢/lb for carrots and $1.38/lb for mushrooms are pretty fucking good prices and the quality is superb.

I cook a lot of central European food, so it's a godsend that their paprika is really, very good. It's about 8/10 but at a quarter the price of 9/10 paprika, so I buy it. I go through a few pounds every year, so it saves me a good deal of dosh to get from Aldi.

Their beef is generally ghastly, so I avoid it, but the pork is pretty decent as is the lamb, when they carry it. I tried the bacon once and it was so terrible, I never bothered a second time.

The imported cheeses are of great quality and very low price. The snack foods, too. They're selling potato cheese crackers right now that are just the bees knees.

I use instant coffee for baking and other stuff (not generally for drinking, though) and their instant is 8,5/10 as far as instant coffees go and it's only a third the price of Nescafé.

Um... pantry staples. Milk. Eggs. Sugar. Flour. That sort of stuff.

Their Nutella knock-off is good as well as super cheap ($1.69, IIRC). Same with the PB. Their all fruit jams are amazing.

I can't speak to the ready meals, though, since I don't generally buy or eat those much, but I did try these frozen corn fritters they were selling on manager's special and they're really, very good. I also tried some veggie burgers (southwest black bean; also a mixed veg one) and they were the best flavoured veggie burgers I've ever had.

Aldi's pretty baller.

Holy fuck Walmart get your shit together

Its like during thier quest to be everything for everyone, they've turned into the worst place to get it all.
Worst produce, sub par meat, disgusting deli, understaffed in every department, and occupied by the most disgusting fucks the surrounding area has to offer.
Every Walmart turns into a community trough for all the fatties and drug dealers to converge and wallow around in.
It depresses me every time. ...but holy fuck you can find some cheap shit there if you're not worried about quality or self respect.

Strikes me as somewhat odd. However, I'm pretty sure all the Carrs stores in Alaska are just Safeway-owned versus Safeway-operated. They've always got killer (albeit expensive) produce.

I'm not sure if my Aldi is an outlier or they spend their nonexistent advertising budget on shills, but in my experience, Aldi is utter shit. Absolutely no service, incredibly inconsistent inventory, and their produce is rarely fresh. Their only redeeming quality is that they're super cheap, making them basically the dollar store of grocery.

I find it depends on the location.
There are four Aldi stores I know of, two near me. The one closest to me has the better quality produce (other than the onions; fuck me, I don't what's up with those onions, but they go to shit too quickly). The other of the two has meh-tier produce.

As for 'inconsistent inventory,' yes: the special items are inconsistent, this is true. That's what makes them special. There're four whole sections of the store that have them. If it bothers you, either don't buy from those sections or do as I do, buy somethng, try it, then go back and stock up on more if you like it.

One section is for shelf stable specials. It's usually the second aisle. Another is for non-food specials. That can be anywhere. A third is frozen specials. That's usually near the back corner. The last is refrigerated specials. It's usually right by the frozen specials.

And yeah: the quality for the carrots and mushrooms and lettuce and other stuff is indeed superb. The lettuce mine sells is from Tanimura Farms, a company known for its quality produce. The carrots and mushrooms are the same brands as the other grocery stores in my area but for a fraction of the cost. They're likely used as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loss_leaders

And a shill wouldn't say that the bacon is bad, which I did because it is. It's fucking horrible. Or, at least, I thought so.

If you don't like your Aldi, either give up on shopping there or find one you do like. You know: it's a "light a candle rather than curse the darkness" sort of situation.
