There's a lot of snobbery among Whiskey drinkers, I like to think that the "goodness" of a whiskey is a function of its taste and it's price.

I think it's more like back in the olden days, pretty much all liquor tasted like death.

Then during prohibition, the locally made stuff was worse than death, and scotch which only tasted like mere death was a precious delicacy.

Rich people drank scotch while plebs drank stuff that blinded you, then prohibition ended and scotch retained its high status.

Since what America believes is what the rest of the world believes soon thereafter, on penalty of atomic weapons, the word spread that scotch was a most patrician beverage. The Diageo corporation bought out all the distilleries, cleaned them up just enough to make them mostly palatable, but kept the trappings of death flavor to remind people of where things came from.

And here we are today, squabbling over who is the most supreme tip-top gentlesir who can handle the most precious iodine-flavoured dram from a glencairn glass.

well first off i'm not a scotch expert, i never said that. i'm a guy that after watching family and friends order scotch over and over that i had to grab some bottles and try it myself.

these are my opinions, as a 'normie' who enjoys the scotch he enjoys.
to be honest, i only tried the 18 two or three times, and no less than two years ago.
my father always calls me a pussy when i tell him i prefer the 12, so perhaps i'll give the 15 or 18 another try... but he's a 70 year old prick.

i'm glad you're not that mad.

It's good for novelty and I guess it looks fancy but if you want to water down your scotch just do it with a little bit of chilled water.
Use whiskey stones if you insist on a cold drink.

>> No.6404835

But why would you want to chill your drink? It just dulls the flavours, the only time to chill it is if it's bad quality or has a severely harsh taste, in which case adding a bit more water would do it.

Scotch and bourbon are subsets of whiskey.
Whiskey is the general term.
Bourbon is usually made in america and adheres to a much more confining set of requirements for how it is produced.
Or rather a narrower set.
Scotch, as the name would indicate, refers to whiskey made in scotland.

I've actually never had jim beam. As for the difference in flavor, it varies a lot based on how it's produced. It's variety in flavor being one of the things whiskey is known for.
You could look up some wiki articles on the various names you just asked me for some base knowledge on what is involved in the production of each of them which would give you something to go on when deciding on new stuff to try out.
Other than that, read this thread I guess.

There seems to be a lot of mixed reviews. On one hand, some people seem to love it, and it gets massively hyped up. On the other, some say that from all the hype, its over priced and over rated.

Personally, I think if you like Laphroaig then its probably worth giving it a go. It doesn't seem too expensive to me (£40) and perhaps you could be one of those who love it. Personally I haven't tried it as I don't really like Islay whisky.

I've tried the Machir Bay, their more-or-less regular young expression, and it's a solid whisky. Reminds me a bit of Caol Ila, maybe a little sweeter. I've also tried the Loch Gorm and it's a great malt too.

They are overpriced because they have a moderate capacity and distributors the world over are fighting over it, whisky this young shouldn't cost anywhere near what most places end up charging.

Overall, a great new promising Islay distillery. Can't wait until they start releasing 10-12yo bottlings regularly, maybe it'll start getting cheaper by then.

Gentlemen, a question if I may.
I found pic related while cleaning the pantry at my mother's house. Apparently it was bought when my grandfather died, making it 31 years old. It is still sealed.

It's drinkable, but don't open it. As far as I know that's not a particularly fashionable whisky which will make people care less, however a three-decades old unopened bottle is something that will probably get certain collectors interested. Try and sell it.

Old bottles of whisky that have been sitting around for many years can develop some weird off smells which lift off after it's been opened for awhile, not that this should matter to you. The reason someone might want to buy this from you is that old bottles are interesting because they let you taste and compare an old product with new ones, which can be an interesting experience.
