O'Dell Milk Chocolate Stout. Can't even taste the alcohol, much less it being 8.5%. Very smooth, nearly as good as Founder's Breakfast Stout.

Just got me some Newcastle Brown Ale. It's my favorite, since it's rather mild and smooth. I'm not much of a heavy drinker.

After I finish of the weekend of performances, I'm gonna celebrate by picking up a Bitches' Brew. Fuckin' love Miles Davis and love honey, figure I'll love Miles Davis honey beer.

>>What are you sipping on (or chugging) right now, if anything?
Finished a bottle of Hacker-Pschorr Munchner Kellerbier.
It was nice. I think i've never had a Kellerbier before. Sweet and malty with low bitterness. But i honestly picked it because of the cool flip-top bottles without any markings whatsoever except for the labels sticked unto it. That feel when i pick bottles based on the bottle now at days.

>>What's your go-to beer, session wise or just a nice thing to have a couple of for the night?
The ones i brew. When i want to try something different, i usually pick smaller breweries without marked bottles because i re-use those bottles and i feel that it is wrong to bottle my brew into a bottle that has the name of some brewery. I mostly pick up ales though. I love belgian beers and their yeasty complexity, and really enjoy north american beers, i specially love citrusy north american hops. I usually avoid lagers though. But when i'm on a bar, i usually pick whatever there is on tap that isn't too expensive and preferably isn't a lager. I might even pick a cider or a perry over a lager.

Just about to open my bottle of Stillwater Stereo. Guy at my bottle shop recommended it.

Oddly enough Abita Purple Haze. It's not too sweet, not too hoppy. Good balance. Or maybe Sweetwater 420. It's becoming my gold standard for pale ales.

>>What are you anticipating to get or pop open in the future?
Honestly not a lot. In the last two weeks I've had:

Mikkeler Beer Geek Brunch Weasel and Daydream
KBS. Twice.
CBS.
Blushing Monk
Great Lakes Brewing Chillwave.
Weyerbacher Sunday Morning Stout
Stone chai Russian Imperial and 4.20.15

You must be in western PA, I assume in an abandoned coal mining town, because PBR being "cool" was a thing about 12 years ago.

We've come full circle. Williamsburg hipsters drank PBR because it was cheap, and it was provocatively working-class. Then middle class flyovers in the late 00s drank PBR because it was cheap, and it was what cool hipsters did. And now the forgotten dregs in places where people are still culturally intimidated by the newfangled starbucks, the same people that 2003 hipsters were mocking with their working class irony as a fashion statement, are drinking PBR because they found a page on the Wayback Machine that explained how drinking PBR makes you "deck".

You have a depressing view on beer.

While RR is definitely one of the lowest IBU Lagers on the market, making it pretty palatable, you seem to be the type of person who confuses "beer" with "lager" and makes sweeping judgments based on your extremely limited knowledge on the subject.

Lager is traditionally the shittiest form of beer, including Bud, Amstel, Coors, Rolling Rock, etc. They are shitty because they take zero time to make, are sugary, and have little to no flavor development. They are cheap and common for these same reasons. Good lagers have their purpose, such as drinking at a barbeque, or after doing manual labor, due to their general wateriness and sweetness, although most other kinds of beer serve this purpose equally well.

Commercial Lagers are shit, I've tried pretty much all of them and they taste like failure in a bottle, uninspired and unrewarding. Do some shallow research and try some real beers and you will feel pretty foolish for saying that "beer is shit."

Nothing at the moment but maybe will be heading out too a beer bar that has a bomber of Snorkel from Jester King. Farmhouse Ale with Sea Salt and Oyster Mushrooms. mite b cool.

>What's your go-to beer, session wise or just a nice thing to have a couple of for the night?

I tend to stick to a Fat Tire or a Black Butte if I can get it. Karbach's Hopadillo and their Sympathy for the Lager are also pretty solid as is Santo from Saint Arnold. If I can't get that, my go to is always Shiner Bock.

>What are you anticipating to get or pop open in the future?

New Saint Arnold Bishops Barrel #9 is coming soon so hopefully I can get a bottle to go. My friends have gotten ahold of BB 1,2,6 and 7 so here's hoping we can add to the collection. When we finally get them all, we will be doing a whole taste test with BBQ and such. Other than that, Firestone's 17th Anniversary if I can get my hands on it and I have two bottles of Buffalo Bayou's Fig-A-Ro and Saint Arnolds 20th Anniversary I've been holding for a while now.

It's funny how this beer ages. All i can taste now is chocolate, but like a high cocoa-content baking chocolate.

Also, the carbonation is almost totally gone. I poured it down the center and the "head" didn't even cover the surface of the beer. Now that it's been sitting there is just an almost non-existent line of bubble surrounding the rim.

Very good, though. Feels a lot creamier in my mouth (n-no homo).

I'm old, and I used to like Pale Ale back in the day before lager ruled the world. Also, I just really like very dry, bitter tasting things (also probably related to being older and having smoked for 15 of the stupider years of my life).

I also like really flinty white whines and dry manzanilla sherry and olives and sheep's cheese and I'm getting hungry so I'll stop

Then again, most people I know of my age hate IPA as well, so maybe it's not age related at all.

As for the "something my dad would drink", I'm in my 40s, so I'm probably your dad's age roundabouts, so there's that.

newcastle brown ale is the #1 beer people shouldn't drink. here's why: The Newcastle beer has been found to contain caramel coloring. Class 3 and 4 caramel coloring is made from ammonia, which is classified as a carcinogen. While alcohol is a carcinogen itself, drinking it in moderation may decrease your chances at developing cancer. However, more added carcinogens will have the opposite effect. Newcastle brown is “The one and only” beer with extra cancer causing qualities.

Drinking a Grapefruit Sculpin IPA. It's a bit fruitier than normal Sculpin (hurr) but I like the Habanero Sculpin much better. Drinking it with some ceviche I prepared last night. Solid lunch beer.

I live relatively close to the brewery, so anything Ballast Point is usually in my fridge. Other favorites are Sierra Nevada Torpedo, Hangar 24 Betty, Lagunitas Sucks, and the occasional Pliny (if I can manage to find any). I plan on having an Enjoy By with dinner later.

Doing what shit?

You know this is what you "beer guy" neckbeards want, right? You get pissy when a brewery makes too much beer and gets too popular. You get pissy when a brewery gets successful and attracts VC funding or (THE HORROR) a large multinational backer (see: everyone who refuses to drink Goos Island).

It's funny because one minute beer is the anti-wine, and the next, you people are tripping over yourselves to artificially set up your own equivalents of vintages, terroir, bottle age, specialized glassware, and so on. Next thing you know beerfaggotry is 10x more pretentious than even the worst stereotypes of wine drinkers and beer is only good if (a) you've never heard of it, (b) is some kind of undrinkable brett abomination, (c) loses money on every bottle, and (d) only comes in wildly impractical containers like growlers or 47 oz bottles at 12.7% ABV

At least wine drinkers judge wine by the wine and not by whether the PO box of the holding company is in an acceptable country.

January is fresh. The reason it tastes different is that bitterness maxes out at certain point (there is a maximum signal level that your bitterness detectors can register) and the sugar and alcohol are also at much higher levels in the 120. I like them both but the 90 has more going on with the palate, the 120 is more of a bedtime beer.

Anyway as I mentioned up here>>6415067 every neckbeard loves an imperial stout, you should pick some up. It's basically soda with the sugar levels, but reassuringly dark and boozy and as an added bonus has edgy graphics on the bottles, most of the time.

I was thinking more about central european styles actually. Since you're on the east coast, Brooklyn makes a pretty nice marzen that I'd recommend you try if you're willing to let go of the >muh powerful flavors thing for a six pack. You'll have to wait six months as it's an autumn beer. You could also look for Southampton Keller Pils which is a lovely old world pilsner.

But like I said the strong flavors bug is something that people go through, and I think you should embrace it. As IPAs go, Pliny is really a great beer and deserve the praise it gets, although I wouldn't travel for it. Here on the east coast I really like Sixpoint Resin. The Hi Res promises more but I think you will find that like the Dogfish 120 more isn't necessarily better. See, you and I are more alike than some people want you to think.

My mother said to me- "Don't ever smoke. Please don't put your family through what your Grandfather put us through." I agreed. At 28, I have never touched a cigarette. gotta assume that you meant 'couldn't' and that you're begging a lesson and not trolling.

Saisons are pretty easy to brew, even dark ones. There's nothing special about the wort. Primary needs a healthy starter, but that's not a problem these days, and a decent amount of exhaust - so pop a blowoff or leave it open. Saison strains produce more phenols when you let them ferment at a higher than normal temperature after high krausen. It attenuates to its capacity in the same amount of time as most ale yeasts.

When brewers boil hops they are converting the acids into bitter tasting flavorful molecules. These same molecules are totally happy to bond with sulfur molecules that are latent from a number of the other adjuncts. When light strikes it, they bond, and make a molecule that still has the preservative powers of hops but totally smells like skunks.

What's interesting is that the specific hop derivatives that turn into this skunk molecule when light hits it for awhile, as few as thirty minutes if you care, are absent from aged hops, which are used in a number of belgian styles. You will find these styles in green bottles and it's fine. Really, the association of these green bottles with fancy shmancy Belgium is responsible for your skunked Heineken.
