Does anyone here drink Brandy? What's a really nice one to drink which isn't too pricey?

>> No.6387724

You could start with Remy Martin

Is straight to only way to drink it?

yes, unless cocktail. there is a wide world of brandy, and alot of it depends on how it has been fortified. are you a regular at your local pub? there is usually atleast one brandy drinker hanging around who will probably be happy to give you an education for a couple of drinks

If you can get your hands on any (it might only be available on the US west coast) Paul Masson is pretty good for very, very cheap. I highly recommend Armenian brandy if you can get your hands on any. American style apple brandy (applejack) is quite good. Laird's is the only widely available brand, but it's a pretty good choice. Try to get your hands on some pisco if you ever want to try something a bit different. I'm not a fan of cognac, since it's super overpriced, but I will admit that even the cheapest stuff is usually at least drinkable.
>>6387738
No, and don't let anyone ever try to convince you that an entire class of spirit is somehow too good to mix with. There are tons of good brandy drinks out there.

>> No.6388212

>>6387747
Laird's isn't applejack. I don't mean to sound like a hipster but fuck it, I am a hipster, and op isn't going to like real applejack. It's fun for people into spirits, perhaps not so fun for people who just want a smooth drink to get drunk from.

In any case jerez brandy is the best bang for your buck. Never, ever buy american grape brandy. French is great but the good stuff costs.

Brandy mixes amazingly with coffee or hot chocolate. Haven't tried it in tea.

I wouldn't mix a super expensive spirit because it would feel like a waste, but then I usually only buy the cheap to mid range brandy with the intention of mixing it.

>> No.6388433

Brandy also works great with ginger beer/ale

>> No.6390194

American grape brandy is it's own style that is quite distinct and good. You need to appreciate it for what it is- a brandy that us very close to the fruit.

E&J VSOP is excellent as is Paul Masson. Christian Bros is dogshit

french cognacs and spanish brandies are good but much more expensive. I never turn down a Henessey but it's not a regular tipple.

if you take the time to appreciate it and really let it sit and taste it you'll understand why all the black guys like it tho. It is a very fine spirit.

but so is E&J and so is Laird's.

I've never had Paul Masson or Christian Bros, but if you're saying E&J is better than them I don't want to.

E&J tastes like vanilla extract. They put so much goddamm oak chips in it that you have to wonder what they're trying to cover up. It is terrible, terrible brandy. I'm not even sure I'd willingly put it in a sidecar, let alone sip it.

Actually disregard that, I was talking about the XO. Maybe the VSOP is alright but I doubt it.

James Bond prefers Courvoisier.
I like Remy.
No matter the name of the brand there's a big difference between say VS, VSOP, XO, etc... get the best that you can afford but that's assuming cognac. Calvados is apple brandy and is really good too, again there are different grades.

Brandy is nice i guess, to age home made fruit cakes, in coffee, and reductions, some desserts and fruits. (brandied peaches or cherries over ice cream) Most of my brandy knowledge is from garrison keillor, a good man and book.distilled wine or fruit. calvados or apple jack, some dark rums, are just that. a slight fruit taste. When I buy it, I get cheap christian brothers, for egg nog or fruit cakes. You can get very expensive, real quick Cognac, vsop, etc. Best ever I had was untaxed (shine) from a mason jar. peach brandy. cold(left in a frezzer) and high proof, maybe 150. But really did taste of peaches... nice. I know enough to not order benedictine and brandy twice for a table of four, unless you want a $200 bar bill,Also I don' like "shine". usually junk, you don't know how or what made from and higher priced than at the store. and had some experience. as always, up to you ck

A 3:1 ratio mix of cognac to godiva white chocolate is really good, it's fattening as fuck so something to have just as a treat or if to impress a grill.

XO and VSOP are worlds apart. I don't buy the XO since it tastes like grape juice mixed with a teabag

VSOP is ultrafruity and heavy on the vanilla but good.

again, if you're looking for cognac, American brandy is not that

American brandies lack flavor, but are good for mixing. Raynal is the best brandy for the money that is readily accessible. Cognac and Jerez brandies are awesome but will cost you more.

Not looking for cognac. As far as grapes go I like armagnac, cognac, and jerez equally. Variety is nice. I think jerez offers more for the money if we're picking favorites, but if money is no object cognac is great. I was just horrified at the E&J, a basic reserva jerez from Spain costs the same amount as that XO california brandy, and is much better. Even Azteca brandy from Mexico is better.

It's like the worst caricatures of California wine - oaky and syupy and not much else. Thankfully not all California wine is like that, but I wonder if all California brandy is

I had really bad college brandy memory:
>with a friend we would skip english class (Im from Quebec, so nobody really cares about a friday morning english class)
>we would wait for the liquor store to open at 9am and get drunk in a park.
>once we bought cheap brandy
>then we went to a big grocery store, bought eggmilk, stole bread and cheese
>we went to the park and got shitfaced on brandy egg milk eating cheese
>I puked so bad later that I never touched the stuff again.

Fast forward 12 years, my parents who don't drink hard alcohol gave me a bottle of Remy Martin that they received as a gift. The stuff was pretty good to sip and flavour, like a whisky or a cognac.

this is not a al/ck/ thread however >>6393182 here

I went to Science college so MAths/Physics/CHemistry were courses where we didnt get drunk
Courses like history, politics, cinema, arts, second language were the one we would drink away.

Drinking at school destroyed my life. I did it because I had really strict parents and was basically locked in my room when I was home, so the only fun I had in life was on school time.

I really dont recommend drinking before courses altough a lot of people do it. Never do it alone.

Back in college days we wuld run to the closest bar between the 15 minutes interruption chug 2-5 beers and went back to the course.

Brandy is the original cocktail spirit. If there is a mixed drink made before 1950, chances are it was made with brandy unless it says otherwise. A Stinger is brandy and creme de menthe, but if its made with something like vodka it becomes a Vodka Stinger.

A think a Stinger or Sidecar is probably my favorite brandy cocktail.
