i thought france probably had good restaurants from other cultures because of it being a former great empire and all, are those really that bad?

french wine is also inexpensive compared to the UK or USA, you get decent bottles for cheap.
going for 9€ a bottle you're already buying really ok stuff.
Shop in small wine shop, not chains like Nicolas

alright, enjoy your stay.
Consider those:
Blue elephant (thai)
Godjo (ethiopian, take sampler plates)
Ripaille (french food)
Kong for the scenery

Picnic in the luxemburg park also is mandatory

Enjoy your stay ! Sorry in advance for my countrymen's english.

What I realy miss is french bread. (baguette)

As simple it could be. A baguette with butter, in a coffee.

It really depends on where you will be. There is no "real"/typical french dish.
Each and every region has its own typical food, though some are variations of other.

If you're a poorfag or just trying to keep a budget while you're there, I'd go to the Latin Quarter (assuming you'll be in Paris). Student area so lots of cheap places to eat. You can get a 3 course meal for 10 yuros.

French cuisine is awful. You should spend your trip eating nothing but camembert.

This so much. I went there last year, took me about 15 minutes to find a decent restaurant, don't go to greek and such fast foods, there are some cute and cheap places with french dishes. Friend and I both took 12 € menus
I got: 6 pieces of big frog legs as a starter in some kind of red sauce with wine, steak with roasted potatoes and blue cheese and creme brulee.
He got: escargots for starter, rooster in wine with rice and some puffy pastry dessert, cant remember what exactly. Not the finest cuisine, but the interior was really nice and food was great.

Find some locals who know food. When I went the good places that I found on the internet were INSANELY crowded and the places I just randomly walked into were shit and overpriced and full of fucking Russians being Russian

But the places where my local contacts showed me were awesome and not too crowded

Also prepare for shit coffee, the French do not know shit about coffee. Same with cocktails in general, and liquor that is not weird herbal shit and brandy. But the wine, obviously, so you can forgive.

Agreed, internet and other guides are full of shit, or at best, not so authentic/crowded with tourists. Ask a local about it, though searching for those places alone was more productive and more interesting for me. A lot of locals either don't know or they are some immigrants who don't know shit.
