But I would probably never eat pork (I imagine pigs are sort of hard to kill) and killing and cutting up a cow seems incredibly difficult so I probably wouldn't do much of that unless I really wanted some. Not worth the effort when smaller animals are easier.

Absolutely. I try and limit my meat consumption right now because I buy cheap meat from terrible farms at the grocery store.

I hope to be in a position where I can raise my own animals and treat them well before I slaughter them myself some day.

I found out last year that yes I could, and I did in fact. and so in fact would you vegfag, when it comes to the life of a fish or chicken and your life the choice is easy. last year I lost my job and became a migrant worker, I was camping alog the upper truckee in CA and fishing everyday at first I felt bad, lopping off the fish heads and gutting them like that but when I hadn't eaten for three days and I caught a large trout, at an aptly named 'trout creek' it was the easiest thing the world to end its life to sustain mine.

I eat meat once a week or so. If I had to slaughter and butcher my own animals for meat I'd probably eat much more of it when I killed an animal, preserving what I could and using every part like farmers did back in the day. This would make sense at traditional slaughtering times (late fall, early spring) when heading into and out of a winter where fresh food is otherwise hard to get.

Then I'd probably spend the growing season entirely vegetarian, since there are plenty of other things to eat then, and slaughtering and butchering an animal is a pain in the ass.

If you live in the US, you would understand that we simply eat too much meat on average. Even if you discount fast food, almost all of our meals feature meat as the main dish (excluding breakfast, which too many don't eat).

A balanced diet is essential, and I think that omitting meat without being careful is unhealthy. But it seems that many americans take that as a carte blanche to gorge on meat. There's only so much you can put on a plate, and vegetables are often the ones neglected.

I'd eat a lot less meat simply because of the time constraints involved. The reason I buy meat when doing the rest of my groceries is simply because I'm not a professional butcher, don't have the equipment to slaughter and turn the animal into bite sized chunks on top of having the time to do all that stuff.

The same goes for the rest of my groceries.

Time constraint, money, lack of skill, lack of equipment and lack of room would prevent me to do any of these.

But I know your question is feelings based, and not logistics. Would I feel bad killing a cow, chicken or pig? Yeah sure. Would it be gross? most likely, yes. At least at first, but I'd probably get used to it.

Would I eat less meat than I do now? Probably not. I do eat a lot of tuna but otherwise I only eat meat twice a week, and if I do have it in more dishes then it's often at a 5:1 vegetable/meat ratio.

Absolutely. A farmer with enough means would hire a laborer to do the slaughtering so he didn't have to. There were guys who specialized in slaughtering, and generally people looked at them with a bit of trepidation. That really hasn't changed.

I grow a little food every year, but if I'm being honest, if I had animals and spent time with them every day, I couldn't put them down. A friend of mine kept chickens for eggs -- I could do that. They can be very friendly, just like any pet. Only they give you omelets.

I've mostly only shot animals for pest control, with the exception of a couple kangaroos for meat, so it'd be a bit of a transition but I'm open to learning new skills.

I've gone hunting several times so yes. Food tastes better when you've done the killing. Also it's at it's freshest. Obviously most of us carnivores don't live in a place where we can do it for every meal we eat because it's fucking 2015 and most of us spend 8+ hours a day working which leaves most of our spare time taking care of family or other things and not much time to hunt and there's 20 grocery stores within a 10 mile radius of most people so why don't you stick your food for thought right up your ass?

I have at my mom's farm before - yearling lamb and chicken/turkey. I just usually don't because of space constraints.
Better than getting it from a factory, so I don't mind.
Plus her sheep are spoiled as hell. She babies them until it comes time to slaughter (and even then).

I've killed and butchered animals in the past, so yes. It would probably change my meat eating habits some though. I'd be more likely to eat things like beef, lamb, and pork than chicken or fish, since the amount of work required vs. the amount of meat you get is less with larger animals.
