The press is a bit wasteful. A clove of garlic doesn't run clean through. Furthermore, they're a pain in the dick to clean.

Thirdly, Allahton Brown, blessings be upon Him, said they're bad, so knownothings who've never used one, don't cook and can't give you reasons against it just scream "NO! THEY'RE BAD!!!" and "Allahton Brownbar!" at you just because He happened to say so and for no other reason than that.

You know that garlic presses are an alternative to mincing the garlic, rather than just peeling it, right? You peel the clove of garlic either way.

>What would you be doing where you need garlic but no cutting board for anything else?
Hummus

Garlic press is objectively faster than using a knife to mince the garlic. It's also definitely going to take longer to clean, but I don't think it's much of an issue. The only good reason I've seen to use a knife over it would be that you don't already own a press, or you're really concerned about wastefulness like >>6293829 said.

>You know that garlic presses are an alternative to mincing the garlic, rather than just peeling it, right? You peel the clove of garlic either way.

When you smash the garlic with your knife it simultaneously peels it and minces it for you. Want it minced "coarse"? Smack it gently. Want it minced "fine"? Smack it hard. Want a paste? Smack it really hard. The peel simply falls away, requiring no real effort to remove.

On the other hand, with a garlic press you need to first remove the peel, then press it. This step is skipped by smashing the garlic on the cutting board instead.

>>Garlic press is objectively faster than using a knife to mince the garlic

I disagree. I can put a clove of garlic on the board and smash it in literally one second. It's done. Finished. Peeled and minced in one smack. It would take me much longer just to pick up the garlic press, let alone to peel the garlic first and then use it.

In all seriousness though, it probably doesn't work for shit for stirring. In my experience, the only reason you really need to stir something that's simmering, that you can also walk away from, is because the heat is too high. Have a girl over. Make something requiring a little garlic. Mincing by hand is going to make your hand fucking reek of garlic. Takes at least a day to get rid of that smell.

I know people working in kitchens don't realize how much they smell of the food they prepare, but it is fucking disgusting. Garlic presses help one of the most disgusting aspects of this.

First off, why would it get garlic on your hand at all? Unless your knife skills are horrible you can mice the clove while barely touching it.

Second, even if you do get garlic all over your hands why not just wash them? Rubbing your hands on a metal object while you wash them gets rid of the smell. You can buy a device for this (called a "no-onion bar" google it), or you can use any metal object, like a piece of silverware.

Smash it with your fist and throw it in. Crush it with the flat of your knife if you are a woman. Chop after for like 1 second if you absolutely must make it undectable.

This whole thread makes me think high school home-ec classes need to include like half an hour of knife skills.

Chopping onions/garlic/eggplants/bananas/apples are all so damn easy, but people market these weird specialized gadgets and apparently people buy them.

Chopping vegetables is a basic life skill.

>school home-ec classes need to include like half an hour of knife skills.

While that would be nice, it's sadly never going to happen. These days everyone seems to want to push off everything onto schools, but at the same time schools are struggling meeting international standards and thus everything that is not "core academics" is in high chance of being cut. Wood shop? Home Ec? Metal shop?, etc? They have nothing to do with standardized testing, and they're also lawsuit bait when little Jenny cuts her finger learning how to peel a carrot. Alas, those sorts of classes are disappearing.

Thankfully, it's totally unnecessary for a school to cover this. That's what parents ought to be doing.

Oh, I know.

I'm just saying that the responsibility ought to lie with the parents, not the schools, for fixing that problem.

I am actually in favor of more practical things being taught in schools but I also realize there's no way that's actually going to change.

If this worked, it would actually be a really cool device for disabled people. In fact, I would not be surprised if this was a cheap, shitty attempt at remarketing disabled utilities towards the idiots who shop on TV.

Every now and then I see devices specifically for the disabled pop up in these threads and it kind of breaks my heart.

Biggest problem with all these specialized kitchen gadgets: they take up valuable counter and cabinet space.

If you are living in a small apartment, a chef knife, a cutting board, a frying pan, a sauce pan, and a moderately big pot are all you need and you can free up much more space.

And for every sandwich machine, garlic press, apple corer, whatever you don't have you can have something like an immersion blender or a spice (aka coffee) grinder that actually does a lot of different jobs.
