Some of you may have noticed that today is the birthday of the inventor of instant ramen.

So I wanted to start a thread that was partly in honor of it, and ask: what instant ramen did you grow up with?

For us, it was Maruchan Instant Lunch. Sometimes we'd make the bagged ones, but the cups were more convenient. Back in the '80s and '90s, these came with chunks of dehydrated egg, the chicken flavor had pieces of chicken, and the description said "Oriental Noodles with Vegetables and Egg". The font was the one on the pic here.

None. Parents cooked all meals from scratch when I was a kid, I never had that stuff until I bought some for dorm snacks when I went to university. I started buying the exact same thing as OP pic, then switched to the Asian brands as they weren't as bland.

Every single one, huh?

There's not much in the way of convenience foods in the nonindustrialised world so everything is 'from scratch' because there's no other option.

>>6293710
Didn't have my first until my parents were transferred to Asia in the summer of 1989. I don't remember the brand but it was definitely supposed to be chicken flavour. The dehydrated chicken bits tasted of ash to me. I disliked it a great deal.
Then we moved to America in autumn the next year and I had my first packet instant noodle. Like the other, I don't remember this brand, either, but the packet was blue. I remember not disliking it.

>> No.6293815

When I was young there was a brand of instant noodles called "fun pots" or something like that, they were quite small, like half the size of a standard pot noodle but I way preferred them over pot noodles. Though I can't seem to find anything on them at all, not even a picture.

Pretty much. We went out to restaurants when it was a special occasion like a birthday, anniversary, etc. Parents never bought or served ramen.

>There's not much in the way of convenience foods

I was raised in the US. Still live here. We just didn't buy convenience food. I ate a lot of that crap when I lived in dorms on campus and had crappy access to cooking facilities. When I moved out I kept eating that and also a lot of fast food. Then while doing my finances I found out just how much $$$ I was spending on shit food. so that had to stop. I started teaching myself to cook with the usual basic shit: pasta sauce out of a jar and worked my way from there.

Don't lie. You're from Molvanîa or Elbonia. I know your type.

I'd try it. I don't remember if it was Maruchan or Top or Nissin or whoever, but there was a crab flavour and a lobster flavour. They were both very, very good. The closest I can find is HK Nissin mixed seafood flavour, but that's $1/cup.

Whenever I think "Italian flavour," I think of Polish "Italian soup," which is delicious. I keep a mix of the stuff around always because it makes everything better. Everything.
If I could find that flavouring in powdered form, I'd toss it with popcorn and stuff.

I ate nissin as a kid, we called it oodles of noodles. Usually we'd get the chicken flavor but I really liked buying the cajun chicken kind when it was still available.

Maruchan was my favorite ramen, mainly because of the smiling kid on the front of the package.

Pic related. I'm actually a little amused how some people are "discovering" this. It's like the cheapest "not bad" SEA noodle.

I love 'em. Obviously they dont work so well for all the things you can do to fancify the other flavors with all the day-glo orange cheez powder but there are other uses.

one thing I used to do is cut up a block of cheese into cubes, then spear a cube with my fork, then hold it under the hot broth until it melted a little (just a little), then eat it. it was weirdly delicious, this partly melted cheese soaked in salty ramen broth. worked best with chicken flavor.
