/ck/, how does Vegemite/Marmite even taste? Can you describe it? At least loosely?

Deep, rich and slightly sour is the best I can come up with

>> No.6276846

Vegemite is a yeasty very salty flavour, it's good in small amounts spread across buttered toast. Marmite is like a beginners vegemite, it's less strong and a little bit sweet. I eat vegemite toast every day because nz stronk

>> No.6276853

marmite is sweet and salty but vegemite tastes like ass

>> No.6276869

>>6276846

basically this.

Don't treat vegemite like you're eating nutella or peanut butter. You honestly need a tiny bit of it. It's god tier snacking food on buttered toast.

How does it mix with something like a sausage or ham?

>> No.6276887

>>6276873 i'm not that guy but i have to say that i've honestly never thought of trying it with any type of meat, i don't think it'd taste that great, it's insanely good grilled on bread with cheese though. Which is called a Mouse Trap.

I eat vegemite from the jar, it's delicious but an acquired taste since foreigners seem to hate it, also its grouse on toast with scrambled eggs

Am I crazy, or is there a vegemite drink you can get in the caribbean? I was on Andros Island in the Bahamas for a few days once and had this drink that came in a dark brown bottle, think it was called vegemite. Shit was awful. Is is something else? Anyone know what I'm describing?

Odd, I find Vegemite to be overly sweet, like a beginners Marmite. Maybe the real stuff in NZ & Aus is different.

>Vegemite drink in a brown bottle

Vegemite & Marmite are both made from used brewers yeast. So technically "Vegemite drink" would be beer.

well they sold it to teenagers in high school without blinking an eye, so either the bahamas has very lax drinking laws or I'm thinking of something else yet.

You appear to be remembering an April fools joke. Except in your mind, it was real and happened in the Bahamas.

It's very salty, and very strong.

You really need to eat it spread VERY thin, and combine it with something else as well. Butter / Margarine works well (spread on first, then the vegemite so the black turns into a brown), anything with a neutral-ish flavour that goes well with salty stuff.

Neine, friend. It was a very real product sold in stores, and people we talked to on the island (both native or otherwise) knew of it (and its reputation for questionable taste).

I'm just trying to remember this brown bottle shit that tasted like ass and had a vegi-something in the name I think.

Marmite has a consistency similar to honey and to me has a much better flavor than Vegemite.
Actually I think Vegemite is vile, like a low-end mass-produced version of Marmite, and it has a weird consistency I didn't care for.

>> No.6277778

The indian supermarket round the corner has it (I forgot which one, marmite or vegemite)

Should I try it?

Problem is:
I am German
Its expensive, and I would hate to spend 5+€ for something I throw away

>> No.6277815

Only a horrible shitty food culture can enjoy either one. It's no wonder that only Brits and Oz's talk about it.

To describe it for someone who hasn't had it before, it's like boiling down soy sauce until it becomes a thick paste. Take some buttered toast, dip it into a little soy sauce and you'll have almost exactly what marmite tastes like. But I can see how some people like that, I know folks who take sushi and just completely dunk it into soy sauce so the whole piece turns a brown color. It's the same with this stuff. It's a really dominant flavor, very salty, lots of umami...

I haven't tried using it in a stew yet, might be good in that to add extra flavor instead of salt.

Marmite is more intense then Vegemite and you should use less of it.. it also just tastes more expensive.. you'll know what i mean if you try both. its i would say an acquired taste but i eat that shit every morning.
