Some brands like Teapigs and various tea shops sell them, I know, but it's so much cheaper in bulk online... Also, if I go to Japan, I will look out for that matcha. I love matcha. Uggh I had a delicious matcha latte in a shop today, I want more but the only matcha in my house right now is ooooold and stale.

Uh, Twinings has 300 years of history, in London. They just happen to export here. Its really not weak (the strength is on the box), you just have let it steep for a full 3-5 minutes.

I am sorry that the finely ground dust your get with PG Tips or whatever turns into a tea syrup that feels strong enough to get your caffeine fix. I prefer to actually appreciate a range of flavor and aroma in both my coffee and tea.

Never tried PG Tips, looks like crap. I generally hate teabag tea. Twinings doesn't have a 'range of flavour and aroma', they just pack their stuff with hibiscus... I drink it sometimes, it's just... underwhelming. And tastes weirdly too sweet to me. Open a Twinings teabag and you'll find dust.

The only reason there would be hibiscus in the tea, would be if it were herbal tea. I don't really think it's fair to say Twinings tea when you are speaking only of herbal tea. I assure you there's no tart hibiscus in tea that isn't meant to have that.

My only complaint is that teabags used to contain far more tea in them. I know moms and grandmas everywhere used to remember being able to brew a second cup with the same teabag and/or be able to get a very strong brew from one. I haven't had PGTips outside of vacations, but if it's old style, I'd certainly seek it out in my imported sections in the grocery (it's available everywhere). I'm however happy with most tea I buy, whether it's Twinings, whole leaf in a tin, or ordered from a catalog or specialty shop. I like all types, from delicate darjeeling first flush, to that cheap jasmine green you can buy in the yellow can from asian groceries. Whatever my mood, I find something I like. I think the water matters as much as the tea.

Matcha is grown in mostly shade, so that the leaves do not become bitter from tannins, this also makes them a rich green because they produce more chlorophyll. Then they dry and grind up the leaves. It costs more than your average green tea, but it's delicious. It's also supposedly healthier. Price-wise, you're looking at at least 7 euro ish for 30g. But you'll only need to buy in small amounts because it goes stale quickly.

>> No.6279250

Literally all their fruit teas are packed with hibiscus, so they all taste the same. I've not tried their 'regular' tea, because I really don't trust teabag tea to not be bitter, seaweed-tasting, or just flavourless. And also because I don't see it in the shops, here Twinings seems to be marketed as a 'herbal and green teas' brand. But yeah. They're not amazing, imo.

Loose tea is best. Also, the water? What do you mean? Do you use special water for your tea?

good tea is the mood it gives you, not what some snob says. same reason i can enjoy a celestial seasonings bagged tea just fine and laugh if someone thinks i am stupid.

and btw the kappazushi tea comes in a can and is free for use at kappazushi restaurants - kaitenzushi places where the sushi/nigiri/etc goes around on a conveyor belt...or a shinkansen for special orders..not jokeing - but you can buy your own can and refills at checkout.

When buying herbal tea's/stuff that isn't just leaves, how do you measure it? How do you brew it?

I wish we had a pastebin for info, or that I just wasn't a retard.

I'm a tea newbie. For green tea I've had bancha, sencha and china gunpowder. The latter is the strongest but among these three I think I prefer bancha although there's not much difference between bancha and sencha.

I also like english breakfast but after eating something. I had some on an empty stomach and was feeling bad for 1-2 hours afterwards.

measure it with a teaspoon.
brew it with hot water then strain it with a tea strainer
The most important thing is the time you steep it for and at what temperature. It's always labled on the box/tin what time/temp to do it at. Different compounds are released into the water at different times and temperatures and will change the flavor. If you find your tea not strong enough don't be tempted to brew it longer as this will change the tea usually making it super bitter. Try adding more leaves. Some tea you can get away with brewing it longer, usually tea that can be brewed multiple times like green teas.

Thanks.

Related question, how do you re-use tea leaves? Do you brew them and let them dry out again or something?

>> No.6290419

>>6290391
You might want to use a timer or stop watch. I even use a hand held infra-red laser guided thermometer sometimes ....... I know that's crazy but it's needed sometimes.

For instance, the brand of Earl Grey I use most often is very smooth. Almost bland, no astringency. I usually steep it 20 extra seconds and it comes out perfect amount of bitterness. Even half a minute can greatly change the flavor.

Another brand of earl grey requires 170°F. First time I made it was undrinkable and it has very very bad online reviews because earl grey is usually made at a much hotter temperature. When steeped at hotter temperature it's undrinkable, but at 170°F it's very very good. Time and temperature is key to a good cup of tea.

I usually just leave the leaves in my tea strainer if I plan on making another cup later in the day. They'll be a bit damp and will get yucky after too long so I usually throw it out at the end of the day.. Also important to note when re-using leaves you'll want to add roughly a minute to the brewing time for each time the tea's been used. So if it's 3min 1st time around, 2nd time will be 4 min, and after that 5 min, and so on. Some good quality oolong can be reused 8 or 10 times while black tea can only be used once. This is advanced tea stuff that I don't know quite enough about.

Pu-erh teas are notably powerful-tasting, however it's not a bitter "I just licked soap" taste, it's very distinctively tea-y. there IS some earthiness, and when you drink it more you'll come to notice finer notes. It's not an acquired taste, but you get more accustomed to the delicate flavors the more you drink it.

green tea in South East Asia (especially Thailand and Vietnam, the tea you usually get for free in a restaurant) usually has some kind of "starchy" sweetness. i asked around, but so far did not get useful replies. some told me, they boil the tea with pineapple leaves, some tell me it is a kind of syrup, some say that the tea is already sweetened when they buy it. the taste remains the same or at least very similar, no matter what i am told how they do it.

Have stainless steel tea kettle with a copper bottom. I descaled it with water + lemon juice and all seemed well, it looked as bright and coppery as it ever had. But soon after, I noticed the bottom interior became discolored a sickly tint. Blue, green, purple, rainbow, you name it. Weeks later I decided to try diluted vinegar on it and thought it was good as new again, until I boiled water in it and it turned purple again as soon as I wiped the inside dry after it cooled. After some more googling I tried a paste of salt + vinegar, but same results.

Copper is rarely used for the inside of cooking vessels because it naturally corrodes (aka "gets a patina") which is that green/blue color you're seeing. Same thing as the statue of liberty (it's made of copper, the blue color is the patina).

Because of that copper cookware has a coating or other layer on the inside of it. Classic old-school copper pots and pans were "tinned"--coated with molten tin inside, and they periodically had to be re-tinned as the layer wore off. Modern stuff usually has a layer of stainless or something on the inside of it.

That being said, if yours has copper inside then it probably had a coating of some kind in there which has since been lost, perhaps due to your cleaning. If it is now bare copper then there is nothing you can do about it, the corrosion will keep coming back over and over again.

In my experience, some teas are an acquired taste. When I first started drinking green tea I couldn't drink it without honey. I gradually reduced the amount of honey and now I drink it unsweetened unless it's a fruity blend. And obviously, you might also want to try brewing your tea weaker.

I hated earl grey until I started drinking it with sugar and a little milk. Now it's one of my favorites. Some tea tastes good with sugar but bad with honey and vice versa.

The water you use also affects how it tastes. When I tried using the bottled water brand I drink daily, the minerals gave the tea a sharp metallic taste. I now buy spring water specifically for my tea. Nothing fancy, just $1 for a 3 liter bottle.
