fruit juice and smoothies often have added sugar and a lot of the fruit, and thus fiber and minerals etc., sieved out.

you're better off eating fruits than drinking fruit juices.

Go easy on high sugar fruits (really sweet) in comparison to low sugar fruits (not that sweet). I think smoothies and juice are ok as long as you make them at home and are aware of what's in them. Storebought juice is bad for multiple reasons, don't buy it.

From what I've read I gathered the following

>Vegetables -- green ones definitely, but carbie ones like potatoes and sweet potatoes seem to be good too, even without the skin
>Fruit
>Nuts and seeds -- limit consumption due to high amount of omega 6 ; eat in whole form, avoid nut and seed oils
>Seafood -- eat low on the food chain to minimize mercury consumption ; wild seafood only, farmed does not have as much of the nutrients you are specifically looking for ; you can eat the bones of tiny fish for calcium
>Possibly optional: Landmeat and/or eggs and/or full-fat dairy -- all grass-fed/pastured only or the desired nutrients won't be there ; if you have bones you should make stock and drink it
>Beans and lentils -- soaked and pressure-cooked
>Whole grains -- it seems like we should be soaking them or fermenting via sourdough, and possibly removing a good percentage of the bran. Your average high fiber brekkie cereal won't give you that.
>Vitamin D supplement
>Cook only in saturated fat, either animal or coconut
>Misc: seaweed, mushrooms, and miso seem to be very nutritious

Eat the souls of your dead enemies with a nice chianti and a side of fava beans.

>> No.6239776

Don't eat too much. You already know what's good and bad, conventional wisdom about food is correct unless it comes from fads. That's when foods are either demonised to elevated to superfood status.

Exercise but don't go overboard with it. Do a mix of running, yoga and lifting. Also meditate and learn a mental game like chess. Mental health effects your longevity as much as anything.

Socialise, studies show that social people are generally healthier. But again don't go overboard with it. Solitude is important too.

Besides this shit is just down to things you can't control, genetics, environment etc. I think one of the underrated facets of health is eating as much as you need for an active life. Not stuffing yourself and spending 9 hours a week in the gym burning it off.

>even without the skin
it's okay to peel russet/sweet potatoes when the skin is too thick. it's almost like cardboard then.

but if you're buying small thin-skinned potatoes and peeling them, you're doing it wrong.

>conventional wisdom about food is correct unless it comes from fads. That's when foods are either demonised to elevated to superfood status.
I think this is usually right but it's still a "middle ground is always best" fallacy. Some foods/ingredients are tantamount to poison and should not be eaten even in moderation.

why don't people eat more tiny new potatoes? so much better than big honking russets. the swedes and their ilk have it right.

>> No.6239826

>>6239803
Conventional wisdom isn't the middle ground. Everyone knows butter, added sugar, refined flour, red meat etc aren't good. That's conventional wisdom. Some of them you can have occasionally, some are better avoided altogether. For the most part we already know what's good and what's not. It's only on things like milk that we're split.

I just made a shit-healthy lunch for work tomorrow.

Sweet potatoes, carrots, ratatouille, tomato paste, peas, lentils, sardines. Not great as is but with a load of garlic, chili and mixed herbs it's palatable.

I appreciate all of that info. I think the best way to eat healthy is to zone in on your own eating habits and make them more healthier. Like I am now eating bagels and sometimes oatmeal for breakfast instead of cereal. Im also (trying to) snack on nuts and fruit instead of potato chips and candy. I quit drinking sodas a long time ago, water and coffee exclusively now...

Assuming an average human being with no special dietary needs, ideally, a whole foods diet made up of:
50% veg
20% grains or starchy tubers
10% meat, dairy, eggs or beans
10% fruit
10% what you want

By weight, volume or calories? Eating 50% of your calories through veggies is crazy. Nuts, legumes and grains are the most efficient way to obtain macros. Supplemented with milk, eggs and meat to cover up any slack. Fruits and veg are needed for your micros and an extra kick of energy.

>> No.6239872

there aren't that many things that are legitimately unhealthy

the biggest thing is simply that people overeat. you can be healthy and eat fried foods, as long as you don't eat more calories your body needs

that being said, there are foods that don't fill you up as much per calorie. it'll be easier to not overeat on things high in fiber like oatmeal and vegetables than it is with fried chicken and mashed potatoes, but it's still possible.

you should try and prepare the vast majority of the food you eat. then you know what goes into it. you have more control over the calorie count, you control how much sodium it has, and you can avoid legitimately bad things like trans fats.

My mom used to make new potatoes with dinner about twice a month, she taught me a lot about different foods. And new potatoes made properly are really good.

Most people just go for Idaho spuds and there's nothing wrong with those either; New potatoes aren't expensive at all, that's just an excuse.

look, the only thing everybody agrees on is that you should minimize the intake of processed food with tons of sugar.

there's too much debate over the proper role of fats andcholesterol in the diet to have a definitive answer there. seems like the "cholesterol is satan" approach of earlier years is probably wrong, i guess.
