Vegetable is a culinary category, not a biological one.

>> No.6221467

>>6221466
even if it was a culinary category, mushrooms wouldn't be under vegetables. it's not even a plant it's a fungus.

they are root vegetables, like carrots, radishes, or yams
root vegetables are just starchy vegetables
the lack of specific nutrients that other root vegetables have does not make potatoes not root vegetables

I hate calling foods "starches" or "proteins" or "fats"

This is potato starch. This is "a starch." An actual potato is not, it only contains starch.

I agree with this, but not why. As >>6221471 said, science barely matters as far a defining characteristics go. Tomatoes are botanically a fruit but they're a culinary vegetable.

Back to my point, vegetables don't really hit the umami/savory sensation that mushrooms can give. Anything I make doesn't even taste complete without that sensation. It's like a healthy alternative to msg. (msg isn't bad either, but that's a different story for a different day)

THIS

god fucking dammit it makes me mad when people on cooking competitions talk about 'a selection of proteins for you to cook with' and shit

i get wanting to have a catchall term for meat/fish/vegetarian substitutes thereof, but fuck that shit you sound like idiots.

This also leads to people turning their nose up at things like (masala) potato toast.
>Starch on starch! Oh the humanity!
Like we don't eat things that are fat on fat and protein on protein everyday. If it's done well anything can taste good.

>> No.6222943

Mushrooms are not fungi now?

people are all weird about eating potatoes and bread in the same meal but would be fine with potato bread, or gnocchi, or even the equivalent amount of starch in the form of more fucking bread. you see it on here as well. the world is full of fucking retards.

Yeah it's here that I see it the most. While most people don't like the idea of meatless sandwiches(which s ok) people on /ck/ have to act as if the dish is an affront to cooking sensibilities.
