I used to be mad picky as a kid. I'd like go to fast food places and order a plain burger, then only eat the burger and not the bun. I wouldn't eat any vegetables except like cucumbers, corn, and potatoes. I wouldn't eat eggs. Only dairy I'd eat was cheese. Only ever ate pasta plain.

>How do I learn to like seafood? I don't like missing out.

Start small with things like fish sticks, clam chowder or popcorn shrimp.
Eventually move onto swordfish. It doesn't taste 'fishy'.
Next thing you know, you're paying too much for sashimi and swearing up and down that it's totally worth it.

If you don't like seafood, though, there's nothing really wrong with that. Most of it's really just garbage trawled indiscriminately out of the ocean.

A lot of the time with picky eaters they don't realize they don't like something. They may not have liked something as a kid and never had it since, but a person's palate does change over their lives.

That seems about right. The problem I have, which makes me a partially picky eater, is the texture of things. I've got an extremely oversensitive palate because of certain medications I take. Things like raw tomatoes make me gag so badly. I really wish I knew how to overcome the sensitivity. I want to like/eat them. Every time I fucking see a nice juicy red, washed tomato, it looks SO good. But I can't handle the gagging that comes with it.

I know the king of picky eaters. I'm afraid to tell too many stories about him on here, because someone in his family might recognize him on here. I don't know how much they browse /ck/.
Anyway, this guy won't eat the same thing twice in a week, won't eat leftovers, won't eat tomatoes, onions, lettuce, sauces, condiments, or any ethnic food besides mexican food. He won't eat a meal if it's something he considers "snack food". He won't eat any meat unless it's well done and dry as shoe leather. I'm not a picky eater AT ALL. I will literally try anything once. If I'm not crazy about it, I may not order/eat it again, but I'm always up for trying new things. There's only one thing I'm picky about, and it's a very minor thing. I don't like the flavor of tuna with tomatoes. Like, when I make tuna melts, everyone likes tomato on theirs, but I don't. For some reason the flavor of tuna and tomatoes together just doesn't sit well with my tastebuds. But, that's literally the only thing I can think of that I won't eat. I'd rather eat rocky mountain oysters or braised duck feet some more than eat tuna and tomatoes together, LOL.

I live with my sister (we're both in our mid-20's) and I wouldn't call her a picky eater like most of the people described in this thread. She loves veggies and fruits and is generally open to new and different foods. We cook new things constantly and are always trying different recipes all the time.

That being said, she's picky because once fruit/veggies start to get a little wilty or soft aka less than 100% fresh, she won't eat them. Brown spot on a banana? Nope. Tomato a little too soft? No way. Blueberries not as firm as they were when we first bought them? Fuck no. Also, she loves to cook, but will not eat leftovers, with very few exceptions.

The result? By Thursday (we shop every Sunday) I'm basically a human garbage disposal. I just eat whatever is in the fridge and try to combine shit in a way that is reasonably good. I have to figure out ways to cook up the veggies she won't eat and eat the fruit that she won't touch, which the fruit is usually perfectly fine.

For breakfast this morning, I've having sauteed kale (it was wilting) with soy sauce and toasted sesame seeds, leftover mashed black beans over broken tostada (she only eats the completely round ones) with purple cabbage, carrots and half a tomato (all of which are slightly old) and half of an avocado that had browned on top.

I'm not complaining, but sometimes it's just annoying. She makes good money and I work at a coffee shop, so I have a really hard time justifying throwing away food.

tl:dr sister doesn't eat non-super-fresh food

I'm myself a picky eater. I have assburgers.

>used to be a baby that eats everything
>2 years old

I ban onions, raw garlic (and all the similar bulbous shit), anything with strange texture (fruits, half of the veggies), no cold meat (I'm okay with rare), no salad, no fish which is not white (salmon and tuna), no rice mixed with sauce (I like my rice plain and white). I absolutely hate tomato texture (but love tomato soup).

I eat almost everyday sautéed broccoli with fried egg when I'm lazy.
When I'm not, I just order something plain and simple.
Only fruit I consume is raspberry and Fuji apple.
I always order my burgers (when I'm not being bitchy about calories) without crunchy salad, pickles and tomato.

I was a picky eater when I was a little kid. (A fussy eater actually. My pediatrician tried to explain the difference to me. I didn't pay attention.)

Once I moved into my own place and was forced to cook my own meals, I started making new foods if for any reason that cooking was actually kinda fun and I wanted to make new foods. (And I was bored with pasta, chili and baked beans)

Long story short, I'm not a picky eater anymore.

To all the picky eaters out there. Cook on your own. You'll get more comfortable with each ingredient as you add it to your dishes, and more comfortable with eating stuff if you made it personally. The first time I tried broccoli on my own, I drowned it in buffalo sauce, because I knew I liked that, at least.

I don't know if you can blame parents for kids being picky eaters, because I think some of it is genetic (like there's a genetic switch that says you either like cilantro or you don't). But if the food has vital nutrients in it, your body will tell you it tastes good, everything else is mental.

I was a picky eater. I probably still am, but whenever I go out to eat with friends, I clean my plate because I'm so embarrassed at not liking vegetables or fish or whatever. I choke it down and compliment them on the food.
>that's a really subtle spice, what is that? paprika?

Growing up my mother made plenty of delicious meals, but they were all a little on the boring side. I blamed this on my brother and sister, who both had strong aversions to identifiable bits of vegetable matter. This made me resentful toward them, because when I'd eat at my Italian friends' houses the food was always better. I assumed the only reason my mother didn't cook like that was because my picky sibs would have balked at stuff like eggplant, lentils and escarole. So we were reduced to meat, potatoes and a token salad for most meals.

Later I realized another part of the reason my mother's cooking was so boring was because she was a picky eater herself, and had her own little list of foods she didn't like.

Eating got alot more interesting once I moved out on my own and learned to cook. There were worlds of flavor I never knew existed as a kid.

Shit I don't want to eat: Brown (soft) fruit, Onions, Asparagus, fermented foods, and things with an acrid taste (like coleslaw).
And the grand centerpiece of my disgust with food: "cream of" soups and people who think they are a sauce. Fuck you retards.

Those little quirks are a curious thing. You and others don't like >>6219846 can't stand tomatoes but I fucking love them. Summer farmer fresh tomatoes are fantastic. Can even eat the little torpedo style tomatoes with salt on their own. But then I have some major quirky pickiness that would strike you as utterly odd - I don't like spaghetti and other 'thin' foods like that or ramen. Probably to do with my phobia of swallowing small things. Which can lead to weird pickiness - I'll love corn on the cob but refuse to touch shucked corn. I'm good with raw onion but once it's cooked and becomes slimy and limp it's really unappealing. Other examples I can't think of.

But the anti tomato folks I can't fathom - whenever I make a caesar salad it's practically half tomato.

>>6219982

While I guess that's commendable for you and your father, I don't blame you. Meatloaf isn't exactly the epitome of appetizing in presentation. Then again it's basically the same as a meatball and I'm cool with that. Though they are usually fried and just look more appealing than fucking meatloaf. I also cannot stand bitter tasting foods and vegetables, it either has to be a well established meaty flavour or sweet flavour to it.

Never drinks water - "yes I do! I have 2-3 bottles a day!"

Almost exclusively drinks hot tea (4tbsp sugar per mug - 2+ mugs a day), sweet dollar tea from McDonald's (she drinks dat), or iced coffee

Eats a salad because "healthy" - lettuce with dry overcooked chicken on top and doused with ranch (balsamic vinegar or other dressings are gross)

Eats green beans ("healthy") - but slow-cooked in bacon grease and bacon

Mushrooms taste like dirt

My brother has a similar issue. He was a tiny skinny kid who had to be reminded to eat. Now he's 19 and fat. Parents tried to control the problem by restricting portions, but he wouldn't have it, and from a certain point he'd just cook his own food or eat leftovers after school anyway. Also, he went to Europe about four or five summers in a row where both grandmas competed for his attention and love by cooking him shit he liked (pancakes, steamed dumplings with butter and jam, and other fatty Eastern European grandma shit). Each time came back 20 lbs heavier. I doubt he'll lose a significant amount of the weight unless he steps up his biking, but when he gets his own car that'll probably be over too.

It seriously starts in the womb. The mother's diet affects the taste of the amniotic fluid, which the baby swallows now and again. Whatever the mother eats when she's pregnant the baby will develop a preference for. so a healthy diet is beneficial two-fold: it grows a healthy baby and gives them healthy preferences. Also, same deal with breast milk, and introducing a variety when you start giving solid food...blah blah. And not giving in to resistance when your toddler starts getting fussy. this sounds easier than it is to do, probably. I hope I have the fortitude for this when my own child arrives. I'd hate to be a shitty parent and raise a picky eater.

>>6215084
not gonna lie, I get this too. Gummy fat on meat makes me gag when I bite down on it, always had since childhood. Now I've cooked for him so much and brought him to so many places he will try anything. He's even more open than me. He is the type of dude who will sit down and eat a whole artichoke with garlic, and eat all my frozen leftovers until they're gone. When I met him he ate burgers and mac and cheese and nothing else.

Picky eating is just....crap. the only thing I refuse is green beans and raw celery. But beyond that I will try anything.

Also my little sister is 8 and very open. My mom is raising her like shit but any time I pull out anything new, she wants to try it. That's the key, try. If she doesn't like it, she tries it again later. I haven't known many eight year olds in this generation who will eat raw sushi and asparagus and loves broccoli and cucumbers as a snack, but I mean nurture yr damn kids.

I will eat just about any vegetable or fruit except avocados and papaya. I just like simple food in general, and hate oily things. Love indian food though.

Century eggs aren't even bad, man. They smell like stale piss but they taste pretty damn similar to a normal egg, no strong flavors. The texture of the white is a little firmer even though it looks more jellylike, and the yolk is a little creamier. Give one a try sometime, it might not be your favorite but it's a cool thing to say you've eaten once.

I grew out of my pickiness after I hit my 20s. I do still gag with olives, but I'm trying.

WATER CHESTNUTS CAN FUCK RIGHT OFF THROUGH, they were in every shitty boxed stir-fry my mom "cooked" for us and I have a deep, red hatred for the little white fucks.

Just goes to show anyone can break out of a shitty food childhood, you just have to be adventurous. I didn't like most new cuisines I tried the first few times, its an acclimation effect that rewards you in the end. I never would have thought Indian would someday be my favorite cuisine.

Good strategy. I used to be a picky eater myself when I was little and my mum did the same thing. It was either eat what she made or stay hungry. Later when I learned cooking as a teen, I'd take her words literally (eat this or cook for yourself), but I gotta admit, now I eat everything I used to hate before. Only thing I can't imagine myself eating and despise is alcohol and deep fried eggplant.

I use to be super picky. Plain pizza, plain burgers, well done steak, peanut butter sandwich sort. I am still picky with sea food but everything else has expanded. I will try *almost* anything at least once.

I changed when I moved out, not because I could make anything I wanted, but because free food was fucking gold. It forced me out of my comfort zone.

I'm not picky. I don't like pickles, plain mustard, and spicy shit... but I'll try food made with those types things as long as it not all advertised like "SPICY PICKLES AND MUSTARD SAUCE with pasta on the side but not too much else you won't taste the pickles and mustard"

I used to be able to deal with chili and stew and stuff

But now I just can't fucking stand the ideal of reheating something, especially living in this fucking household with someone who tubs up anything that's been on the counter for more than 5 minutes

It's infurating and these fucks don't buy anything other than snack foods.

Not exactly picky eating, but I used to hate it when food touched on my plate. I would carefully dish out servings so there was room between each item. I also would only eat one item at a time, like I'd eat all of the chicken, then all of the potatoes, then the carrots. I couldn't switch between them, I had to eat them one at a time. I was like this until just a few years ago.

I'm much better now that I started on a different antidepressant. It's helped get rid of a lot of my obsessive-compulsive tendencies.

So much so that there's a version of instant noodles in Korea that are meant exclusively to be eaten dry and not meant to be cooked. They come in a packet like crisps/chips and they're called "crunch crunch" in Korean because you have to break them up with your hands before opening.
