Hey /ck/,

Question for those of you who use the French press, as I just got into it recently. When I make my coffee, no matter what, there's a very grimy collection of dark coffee at the bottom of my cup. I figured just pouring 85% of the coffee from the press, but no matter what, there's that dark, thick spot of coffee at the bottom that makes that last sip no good.

Is this normal coming from a French press? Am I brewing my coffee incorrectly, or should I just be ditching the rest of the cup once I've reached the last few sips? Thanks all.

Just make sure the screen is pretty much hugging the side of the French press and most of the sludge shouldn't make it through.

Are you using coarse ground coffee? If you aren't, that could be a large factor

Somewhat normal to an extent, having a good grinder helps a lot though.

>am I brewing my coffee incorrectly

Yes, but that has nothing to do with your question. It would be best if you got one of these and ditched the 1990s toys.

Will do, thank you.

Yes my coffee is coarsely ground using the machines at the store.

I'll look into that, but I am having fun with the press.

There's going to be some sludge at the bottom of each cup.

Buy an Aeropress.

You need coarse grounds, but more importantly a good quality french press (or cafetiere as we call it in the UK). A poor press will let loads of bit through. Also, plunge the plunger as slow as possible.

Agreed, I only ever get out my French press when I am doing cold brewed now

Paper coffee filters have been around longer than the french press.

it's literally impossible to eliminate sludge. It's a part of life. Small price to pay for possibly the best coffee you can make.

What's your point?

French press was a big fad in the 90s, now everyone has returned to normal. The only people who still use them are >lafroog types who think that sludge and oil makes the coffee more "manly"
