My parents certainly weren't poor, but they pulled shit like that all the time. We lived in a 4000 sq ft. house that they had built when they got married, on 10 acres of land that was a wedding gift from my grandfather. They always drove new cars, and we always had nice clothes. BUT, I was the only friend in my group who didn't have a phone in my room, they would NEVER spring for things like ice cream truck goodies (they'd make us wait to get home and serve us a small bowl of whatever ice cream dad had bought at the store recently), they refused to pay for cable tv and had one of those three story tall antennas, when we asked for a video game console, they bought us cheap handheld battery powered versions of like, 1 game, not even a gameboy. And I could keep listing examples. Huge difference between thriftiness and poverty.
