Try working there. After a while you start sweating that yeast smell, it's disgusting. I did it for a couple summers, years ago. All around it wasn't horrible and it kept me afloat, but I'm glad the experience is behind me now. I currently live near a 24 hour subway, so I still eat there once in a while when it gets really late.

Hiring practices must vary a lot from chain to chain, because there seems to be some consistency in employee quality in a given franchise. Subway and Taco Hell employees are the bottom of the fucking barrel. They manage to make barely-literate McD's and BK staff look good by comparison. If you work at Subway and give a shit half of the time, you're either a manager or the best employee in the place.


All that said, you know what you're getting when you walk in, and the food isn't terrible for what it is, assuming your sandwich "artist" doesn't take any creative license and fuck something up. Or just ignore you because they don't understand English, or are blessed with the attention span and/or intelligence of a goldfish.

I've never cared for any of the "flavored" chicken options (buffalo, teriyaki) because none of the flavor gets into the chicken. They mix it up in the back, it might sit in sauce for most of a day if you're lucky. Steak is weak, they used to have some fatty carne asada that was better. Veggie patties look and smell utterly revolting. I still miss the chicken parmesan sandwich, with the old breaded (fried) chicken tenders and garlic bread.

I really don't understand most of the comments in this thread. Subway has the best fast food I've ever tasted, and I've never noticed a smell. The quality of employees vary, yes, but I don't really care about what the food looks likes so much as what it tastes like.
