I have some cheap 'frying' steak I'd like to cook in a slow cooker. Does anyone have a method/recipe they'd like to recommend.

I'm looking for something more gravy based than tomato based, possibly incorporating Guinness or another ale.

Thanks!

Look up recipes for a beef and ale stew.

Only issue is that the steak is likely very thin so there's a risk of it disintegrating, you may have to cook the veg a bit before adding the beef (although it should be reasonably tender compared to stewing steak to begin with)

Good point re. the thickness. I'll add the meat after the veg. Should I brown the meat before adding, or do you think that would contribute to the issue you mentioned?

mirepoix and garlic after searing cow pieces, herbs and deglaze with beer, beef stock

i don't understand people that need a recipe for this kind of thing, but you should consider adding a little tomato to it even if you don't want it tomato based, like a dollop of paste or something

It'll make it taste a bit better but will reduce the time you can slow cook it for.

Depends on if the steak has much gristle/sinew

Always, get it is brown as you can, there is a huge amount of flavor developed when you get meat properly browned. I've never experienced meat disintegrating, but even if that actually happens outside of a star trek episode, searing it first wouldn't be the culprit.

why are you giving advice to people here, honestly? you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about and you aren't trying to be funny so I simply don't get why people like you exist

He's using a very thin steak, you can't 'brown' it, you just cook it all the way through which means it's going to break down a lot easier than raw steak.

Why wouldn't I want to benefit from other peoples experience. I'll be adding some tomato puree, sure.

are you fucking high?

you are going to give me an aneurysm

getting some color on the beef doesn't start to break down a piece of meat like braising does

I honestly wish you and your family were dead
