I know people hate these threads but i think we need to discuss it in detail.

Why isn't there an established food culture in these miserable islands?
I'm British and i hate the fact that there seems to be no love and passion for food.
You can say that we have roast dinners and a few soups but no dish we can be proud to call our own without it being either incredibly basic or copied and adapted from other countries.

One man alone cant change this so i'm not going to be a one man army and attempt to re-establish glory

im being genuinely serious here, help me understand

This. There's plenty of British food considering how limited Britain is in terms of native spices and crops.

>> No.6093117

Well its because nobody is really bothered about putting British cuisine on the map.

English food is pretty simple and there are a lot of adaptations that really add another dimension which make them as good and in a number of cases better than the original British dish, and they have additionaly been enjoyed by the British for years and years.

But if people want to create fully British restaurants I'm sure there will be fans, but everybody that has this idea must be just like you OP, their thaughts haven't materialised. So the answer is within yourself.

There was. Then WWII fucked it. Haven't you heard of your own "Ministry of Food" back from those days?

My family is half British. The amount of damage done by that "ministry of food" crap is horrible, and the effects are still felt today. My grandmother to this day still swears that the best way to make a gravy is to use leftover water from boiling potatoes and an oxo cube. Needless to say, that's a shit-tier recipe that was actually invented for the days of Rationing and was broadcast on television back then. Too bad that people didn't realize that it was a wartime shortcut, not proper technique at all. That's just one example out of many.

The war did similar damage to American food. For a while in America it was illegal to make any kind of cheese other than American cheese.

Another thing to remember is that many simple dishes rely on top quality fresh ingredients. (This applies to any cuisine). If you have beautiful potatoes you just dug out of the ground and garden peas you shelled yourself all you really need is a little good butter to make them taste great. The same is not true of frozen peas and a potato from the supermarket that's been sitting there for god knows how long.

After war rationing ended ingredients became available again, but they were not always the same as the ingredients your great-grandparents used to get. They were what was cost effective to mass produce and ship. Simple dishes involving these ingredients didn't come out as well.

Today you see new chefs doing very well in both England and the US by doing upscale riffs on classic old school dishes that reflect their heritage. But in order for it to work they almost always need to have really tight relationships with farmers, so they can get ingredients like their great-grandparents used to.

Yes. I mean, the similarity between a British "pastie" meat pie and a hot pocket is undeniable.

As for the other style of meat pie--round with a crust on top--those are very popular in the US. Any supermarket will be loaded with them. Chicken is the most common version; turkey and "beef and kidney" are widely available too.

In the rurual south you'll find tons of recipes for meat pies, often with game meats in them like squirrel or rabbit.

Your country's history is littered with multiple invasions, multiple civil wars and uprisings, and the greatest form of colonialism that's ever been. OF COURSE your cuisine is is based on dishes from other countries and cultures. How could it not? As an American, I can certainly understand, because although our country is very young compared to most, our cuisine is an absolute melting pot of other cultures (excluding the horrifying fast foods etc).
If you want to find Britain's food heritage, look to the countryside. It can only start from looking at the indigenous foods. I'm sure you can easily find a list of foods (both foraged and grown as crops/livestock) that are indigenous to Britian.
Take beef for example. British beef is the best in the world. I grew up in a family of cattle ranchers in Texas, and all our breeds that we raised were from Britain. (Hereford, Black Angus, and Short Horn). You guys revolutionized cattle breeding. Then there's your game as well. And, there's plenty of vegetables and greens that are either indigenous or bred to greatness in Britain.
Anyway, all I'm saying is that there certainly is a great food culture and heritage there, but you might have to dig deeper than what's available locally to you.

I've read that the reason why British food has historically not been very good is that cooking was considered to be one of the lowest jobs there was -- so lowly a job that any kind of training for the job was out of the question. If you couldn't do anything else, then you could be a cook.

Over the last few decades that has changed quite a bit and the quality of the food has gone up.

Britain was unusually shafted by having comparatively fewer culinary resources than a lot of other cultures. Generally speaking, the closer you get to the equator, the more diversity you find in the flora and fauna, and thus the more shit the locals have to work with in their kitchens. Brits are pretty far north, and isolated on an island to boot.

They couldn't grow any of the olives or citrus of Mediterranean, they weren't drowning in the butter or even have huge tracts of land to sow grain in. Too cold for a lot of herbs. Fuck, you're fucked. They have fish, but they can't even grow lemons. That's just sad. It should really be no surprise that they freaked the fuck out when they first tried Indian food and immediately brought that shit home.

Just use a properly sharpened knife. You can pick up old bone-handled Sheffield stainless steel knives for about £1 in most antique markets, they look like a butter knife but they'll take an edge like a razor. Steak knives are just a cheap shitty way to make a knife for idiots that will go through tough meat without needing quality steel.

Traditional British food is all about high-quality ingredients prepared simply. Continental visitors of the 18th century were always astounded by the fact that the average person ate meat regularly. The UK still has some of the best grazing land, and produces fantastic beef and lamb. We have a climate well suited to growing green vegetables and fruits like apples and pears, or berries. It's an island so there's excellent fishing and seafood. What there isn't is spice or a lot of the more sun-loving sweet vegetables. The extent of the Empire brought in a lot of spices and exotic ingredients and influences in the 19th century. Problems occurred when the war and following decades introduced intensive farming and supermarket-oriented convenience foods. The shitty- quality ingredients and crappy cooking of them results in a cuisine which is superficially similar, but much shitter.

On another note, the British have always been culinary magpies, and their buying habits have driven a lot of development, particularly in alcohols. Champagne, Port, Madeira, Sherry, and Bordeaux wines were all made for British tastes. The international versions of Chinese and Indian food are heavily influenced by their colonial involvement. British food in the Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian eras borrowed lots of foreign ingredients and flavours.

Macaroni cheese

I think that just goes to show how most people will happily eat shit. Before the war, people had fresh stuff they grew themselves but I dont think most of them gave much of a fuck about how good it tasted. Then things changed and food sacrificed quality for convenience, and the general public stuck with it because they cant be arsed to buy fresh food or grow their own.
And then people literally prefer the shit stuff even when you give them a choice of nice things. Honestly I think food is really not very important to most people.

Fries at most decent to good American restaurants are leagues ahead of standard, fat and chalky British chips.

>The British are bad at:

>Hahahahahahahahaha

Fine maybe that wasn't totally fair. But there are a shit ton of horrible British desert and generally an excessive use of cream and stodge. Most good pies/tarts are probably borrowed from the French.

>Fish
>It's an island. Do you have any concept of the variety and freshness of the fish you can get in the UK?

The British mostly just fry their fish, and sometimes smoke it. They don't have the spices to cook fish very well because it's delicate. The British don't do delicate.

>Sandwiches
>Invented in England you dipshit.

It doesn't matter where it was invented, the British suck at sandwiches. Supermarkets package cold cuts in packs of like 4. There are very few sandwich shops in the UK that aren't influenced heavily by foreign cuisine. Even the lowest tier deli sandwich in the US is better than most of what I find in the UK. Pret's bread sandwiches are fairly poor.

>Wow it's like "I saw someone eat something on telly once it all looked bad". Just like I saw an American eating this thing called "Sketti" once; how disgusting. All American food must be disgusting.

No, I go back and forth between England and the US pretty frequently. The British are good at some things but still fairly terrible others. And I didn't say the Americans are great at everything, but some things they do pretty well now (at least in a non-shit city).

British food's bad reputation has deeper roots than you might think. Let me explain.

Our story begins during the late middle-age. Around that time, noble people used to eat very VERY spicy. Why ? Because they fucking could, spices had already been discovered in India and using spices was the best way to show how powerful they were. Problem, the spice trade was quickly controled by two nations: Netherlands and, of course, the UK.

And while most of Europe was "happy" to buy their spices from them, one nation had such hatred of them (and especially the UK) they actually began to create their own cuisine without spices just to piss off the Bongs. I'm talking obviously about France.

Problem: when you stop using an ungodly amount of spices, you began to actually TASTE what you're eating. French people were forced to develop new cooking methods and new recipes to improve the taste, creating what we now know as the French High Cuisine. At first all Europe hated it but when France pretty much dominated everything under Louis XIV, everyone started to copy the French Cuisine.

Everyone ? No. Bongs hated the French so much they never agreed with the new cooking methods and started to create their own, doing pretty much the opposite of what French people were doing.

And what happens when you do the opposite of something supposed to improve the taste ? Yes. You get sh... you get the english way of cooking.

There's nothing wrong with British cuisine, the issue is the method passed down from ww2.

Judging any cuisine based on chains and shit cooks is just moronic. Other cuisines are generally difficult to fuck up because they have the presence of spices and herbs. We don't have that, so when you have a nation who is still cooking using methods from an era where economy was valued over taste, you get an awful lot of fuck ups and a lot of people ignorant to these fuck ups.

British cuisine made well is delightful, unfortunately for foreign people visiting, it's rather difficult to find indigenous cuisine, much less find it made well.

British cuisine has declined in favour of imported cuisine because herbs and spices present in other cuisines don't taste of the blandness that results from fucking up their indigenous cuisine.
