So my girlfriend has never had chili before and I want to make some for her, but I want it to be just perfect.

Should I put beans in the chili?

If you care about making chili like it was originally made then you need to compress a block of powdered chilis and whatever other seasons you use. Then take block and add it to water over a fire. After that add whatever filler you could afford back in town mainly beans since they preserve well and are cheap as fuck though you could splurge and go for the less common and more expensive dried meat.

If you don't actually give a fuck about how chili was originally made then put whatever the fuck you want in it because it has always been like most soups and stews a cheap meal with whatever you have at hand.

Truth be told, beans are optional. I used to add beans to my chili back in the day because money was tight and beans were cheap. And I developed a taste for it.

So if your girlfriend considers chili authenticity as a prerequisite for sex, then leave 'em out. But if she just likes really good chili, make sure your spices are good and (maybe) add some beer to the mix, let it cook all day, serve with some tortilla chips and call it a day.

Do you like them/think she will?
If so, yes.
If not, no.

This is not complicated.

Your chili should BE beans

But authentic chili does have beans because like most stews and soups throughout all of history they are made with whatever you have on hand meaning its not always the same.

Even if you were to continue to say the only way it can be authentic is if it was like it originally was then beans would be in it before meat would be in it especially fresh meat.

I love Texas chili, but not having beans is kind of silly if you're thinking its authentic. I'm pretty sure some poor ass cowpokes would stretch it as far as they could.

The only bean your girlfriend should enjoy is her own, when she flicks it.

Beans don't belong in chili, OP.

The big debate comes because modern chili is an amalgamation of two similar dishes:
you have the cattle drive version that was to use up a lot of meat in a hurry because a cow died on the trail and you don't waste meat/food, so you wouldn't have any beans in it
then you have the "we're poor so we don't have that much meat to eat" version which was basically a soup made from ranch style beans with maybe a little meat.

Personally, I prefer using beans too because of the additional flavor and texture, but whatever. If you want to get autistic over your poor person soup, feel free. I'll be over here enjoying life.

Is that actually the origin? I'd always assumed the intent was to stretch meat into a filling meal.

>> No.6092438

And this is on point too. Likely on the trail what happened is the first day or two it was all meat and they started adding beans to it to stretch it.

It's what a lot of pepole claim, I won't claim it as 100% true, but it makes sense. If you're driving a bunch of cattle a few hundred miles with nothing to eat but flour, cornmeal, and beans and one breaks its leg, you'd put it down and user what you could from that cow, especially since you don't have the time to preserve it in any way.

Aren't beans the central part of chili? Chili with meat in it is called "chili con carne," regular chili is beans with tomato and peppers and spices

>> No.6092455

>>6092448
Chili assholes would say that chili with beans should be something like chili con frijoles or some such
