Hi /ck/,

Me mum likes cooking a lot, so I'd like to get her a good knife as a christmas present. I'm sure she has a regular set of kitchen knives already though, so it has to be a really stand-out knife, one that will see a lot of use and preferably looks good as well.

Any recommendations?

That always seemed like a bad idea to me. Surely one side of the toast would be cold?

Unless she's a chef, go ahead and get her a santoku.

she won't appreciate a good knife, so don't worry about it

in most cases you would want atleast 2 slices, making 1 out of 4 sides cold

bonus: never get angry over cold butter

What would you buy for a chef?

Bought my mom a wusthof.
Still uses serrated steak knives for everything.
Don't waste your time or money.

Bought my friends a really nice global... they had me over and asked me to chop veggies for a dish, and handed me a serrated steak knife... it was all colored, too... I think they got it at ikea

Get her a UX10, it has all the points you want covered

>A little expensive but not so obscene she'll be afraid to use it
>A little different than what you'd find at Williams Sonoma
>Awesome ergonomics
>Great balance
>Light, agile, and strong
>Great OOTB sharpness
>Below 60 HRC so still a little bit forgiving
>Default geometry allows for easy touchups without completely regrinding like a lot of knives

I sound like an advertisement. Don't wait! Get your mom a Misono® UX10® today!

OP here. Are there any brands I should look out for as being better or worse?

>> No.6063006

Knives should never be gifted or purchased for another. It is bad luck to do so.

Dexter Russell stuff made in the USA is great. Their little paring knives are the best I've used. Most of their lines are amazing for the money, just be mindful if you pick the high carbon steel instead of stainless stuff that you will have to take care that it's dried after washing.
