I disagree about the "more is better" argument. I think Chicago pizza is better because we are not hidebound by tradition and legal restrictions -- yes, there are actually laws in Italy regulating what can and cannot be done to pizzas:

Of course they don't have to be lower quality--there's nothing stopping an American pizza cook from buying high quality ingredients. But experience has taught me that most American pizzas are made using cheap mass-produced "cheese" (if it can even be called that legally) and toppings.

if you want a doughy, cheesy, topping stuffed pizza, deep dish (assuming that is what you are calling american pizza) is pretty good. Italian style would then be thin crust pizza or regular pizza, which only varies based on the amount of time you allow the dough to rise before cooking it. I prefer Italian style pizza for 2 reasons, primarily because it is WAY faster than deep dish pizza, and because I can put less toppings on it and get a more balanced/complex flavor set up.

I wouldn't turn down a slice of either anyways.
