so today I decided to try something different at chipotle. I went with the carnitas instead of steak and pico instead of the hot salsa. the carnitas were really good and the pico added a nice sweet flavor to the burrito.
what do you normally get on your burrito?
also does anyone actually order the guac? I love it but fuck if I'm paying 2 fucking extra dollars for it.

But it's not. that's the point. The markup on the guac is no higher than the rest of the burrito. Beans, rice, flour, and the meats they use are all very inexpensive. They're charging $2 for 50 cents worth of guac, and for the burrito they're charging $8 for about $1 worth of filling.

It's not a restaurant, it's a casual dining place. It's a Subway-style conveyor belt that forces you to give not just ONE order for a burrito and sit back to pick up your food when it's ready, you have to answer a question for every single ingredient! That's ridiculous and not a restaurant. At an authentic Mexican place, the burritos are just as big, the tortillas are better, there are usually three more types of salsas, free spicy carrots and jalapenos, and you're not ordering from resentful fastfood workers, you're ordering from a person who is part of the restaurant owner's family, and they're grateful for your business or they fucking don't give a shit, but it's not some franchise with retarded corporate rules and an expected high turnover rate. I've eaten at Chipotle many, many times over the years, but I'm done with that place. Undercooked rice during rush hours, gross burned "carnitas," bland as fuck beans, overpriced, stupid Subway style ordering system.

>It's not a restaurant, it's a casual dining place.
I was going to add a note to pre-emptively address this pedant, but decided against it. I guess that was an error in judgment. Fast food and fast casual aren't fine dining, but they're still restaurants. More importantly, categorization does not change the fact that service is rolled into the price. Fine dining includes table service, and the price and gratuity reflect that. Fast casual does not, but there are still staff preparing and shoveling the food for you, rent and utilities to be paid, and a store and equipment to maintain. The point still stands that prepared food is expected to cost far more than just the sum of its ingredients.

The Subway model is stronger than ever with the emergence of online ordering. It's also helpful from a marketing standpoint, as it creates a (false) perception of freshness in the food. Plus, there's an entire fucking generation of special snowflake millennials who love that kind of attention.

At any rate, I'm not out to argue that there aren't higher-quality, less expensive, and/or more authentic options out there. It's just retarded to think that a menu item costing $X should have anywhere near $X worth of ingredients in it.

californian mexican food is different from the "mexican" food you would get say in chicago or new york. mexico is a big country and there really isnt a common cuisine. being close to the border means absolutely nothing. in texas for example all you can find is tex-mex. its not authentic (whatever that means) mexican food either.

i have no fucking clue why you white people always have to be arguing about who has the most authetic mexican food. it's fucking stupid

Brotip: they do the same thing for everything. Japanese food, Indian food, Chinese food, Thai food.

The issue is that whites have no culture. The ones who are a little better off get a passport, go on vacation to somewhere full of brown people, and post braggable facebook photos wearing some cheap souvenir "local clothes" (actually made in China). When they get back home, they approach everyone they meet who might be from country they went to on vacation, and announce proudly that they've been to that place. In this way they try to get some sliver of someone else's culture, however illusory.

The poor ones have to go to Panda Express and Chipotle and then get into arguments over how inauthentic it is. It's not really any worse than what the well off ones are doing, but here on /ck/ we have to put up with these types. Best thing if it annoys you is to filter chipotle threads.

Over 300,000, making them the third largest (and fastest growing) ethnic group in the city.. So if you happen to be in one of the neighborhoods where they tend to live you are just as likely to find excellent Mexican food as you would in San Diego.

In my experience, they give that look because they expect that a ripped tortilla means some moron will freak out because they spill it all over themselves. If a person understands it and sincerely doesn't mind, they don't care, but they have learned through experience that, unless you take people by the hand, it may come back to bite them because there is a small but intensely vocal part of the population that demands everyone know when they've messed up and that everyone else take the blame for it.

It's not, he's just one of those new york residents (may or may not be actually from here) who thinks NY has to be #1 in everything.

In the last 10 years or so the mexican food situation has improved dramatically, but you still need to go to the correct parts of new york to see the changes (really in this case, any part outside of new york county).

But it wasn't like this until fairly recently, the mexicans have always been here but they were a lot more invisible. They'd work in chinese restaurants and french restaurants and jewish delis and so on, but the mexican restaurants were rare, and generally very low quality.

As I said, you have to be in the right neighborhood. I'm in Sunset Park, and it's an embarrassment of riches for good Mexican. I've also lived in LA, and the style here is different (more heavily Puebla), but I'd say it's just as good or better here.

Good stuff is even popping up in Manhattan, too, just at Manhattan prices. See: Cosme.

That's cute. Los Angeles and San Diego metro are each home to literal millions of Mexicans. Probably any major population center in a border state beats New York's Mexican population. The notion that New York has "better" Mexican food than any of these places is the kind of absurd nonsense that you'd only hear from a New Yorker. Stuck-up fucks make Angelenos look modest, which would be funny if it weren't so damn irritating.

>The notion that New York has "better" Mexican food than any of these places is the kind of absurd nonsense
That really depends on your definition of "better". If you're talking high end Mexican fine dining NYC is doing remarkably good at the moment. We've got chefs like Enrique Olvera, Zarela Martinez and Richard Sandoval changing expectations of Mexican food in Manhattan. Ryan Fucking Sutton just today called Olvera "Eric Ripert in disguise".

I'll grant you that if you walk into a Mexican restaurant in NYC at random it has a good chance of sucking. Many places are embarrassingly terrible.

But if you're in a Mexican neighborhood in Brooklyn you will find food as good as what you'd find in California, or even Mexico for that matter. Because significant numbers of people who make that food have moved here, dominating the character of a few specific neighborhoods. I happen to live in one of them. I can get Mexican food here as good as the stuff I had when I lived in LA (or traveled in Mexico). I'll grant you it's the exception, not the rule, but it's a staggering improvement for this town, where Mexican food was a disaster 15 years ago.

When I make it to Olvera's Cosme I'll post about it here. But given the difficulty of getting a reservation and the cost of entry that won't be until well into next year.

I grew up in Ensenada, BC, spent most of my life in San Diego (specifically, in Chula Vista), lived six years in LA and currently live in Portland, OR. Spanish is my first language, is still exclusively the language I use when communicating with my parents (who are from Guadalajara, Jalisco and a small town outside of Samora, Michoacan) and I still spend every Christmas in Ensendada.

The reason I'm giving you my life story is to explain that as a Mexican-American of exclusively Mexican descent growing up in a culture made up of almost entirely "Mexican-ness," I feel qualified to give an opinion on Mexican food.

Portland has much better Mexican food than LA, despite having a small fraction of LA's Mexican population. The number of Mexicans in the census is, ironically enough, apparently irrelevant when it comes to the quality and authenticity of the food.

Just jumping in here, what do you mean by "entire chicken breast"?

Just for scale, the solid piece of chicken breast you get in an average chicken sandwich is 1/4 of a chicken breast. That is, one whole chicken = one breast. Split and you have a split breast (those huge ass pieces of meat that /b/tards spam when they need help on /ck/).

That split breast is still pretty fucking huge. So you slice that through the middle and you get something you can put in a normal-people sized non-fatfuck sandwich. That's a chicken cutlet.

I don't really know what chipotle does as it never occurred to me to freak out about how many grams of protein I was getting from a fast food meal, but your average person could easily confuse "chicken cutlet" with "chicken breast" since the cutlet is made from breast meat.
