Anyway, Tamales are pretty much overrated in the latin American/Mexican community. I don't really understand how people can have such appeal for a food that has no layer of flavor. I'm not sure how much info you guys actually want.

My mother was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, but her family moved to Tijuana shortly after. My father was born in Ario de Rayon, a very small town outside of Zamora, Michoacan but spent most of his late childhood and teenage years in Oceanside, CA. I was born in the US, in Chula Vista, but lived in Tijuana until I was 9.

Technically an anchor baby, but my parents went through all the proper channels and red tape to get permanent residency in the US anyway (my father was a legal migrant worker and got residency through the Simpson-Rodino Act). My parents didn't become naturalized citizens until I was well into my 20s. My mother could have become a citizen much sooner, because she had a law degree in Mexico, and a Masters Degree in Education in the US, but she wanted to wait until my father (who was a high school dropout) was able to attain citizenship because his wait period was significantly longer. Again, because they wanted to do it the "legitimate" way.

So, technically, and rather ironically, I was actually living as an illegal immigrant in Mexico when I was a boy.

Tamales are alright but definitely are overrated. if they were a ubiquitous item like sandwiches then they would get old fast. they're only revered because they're time consuming to make and they're associated with the winter months. you also wouldn't want to eat them with any regularity as dough is made with 50% lard in a traditional recipe. it's pure decadence.

Agreed with this, and to that I would add any tortilla-based Mexican food, with tacos being the most overrated by far.

Not that they're bad, but they are definitely poor people food that don't deserve the attention they get over finer Mexican cuisine. But then, as another anon has explained, when you look at representation of Mexicans we find in the US, I guess it's not that surprising.

It's hysterical in LA, some of the old roach coaches that have been around forever have cashed in on the food truck fad. They get LED banners up on the truck and maybe a vinyl wrap, and suddenly they've got the Latinos lining up all night long for the same pleb food that they sell to construction workers during the day. The premise of this thread is invalid. Any dish can be done well. It's called "overrated" by people that are unfortunate enough to have had only bad examples of it, and so they write off the entire dish via mental laziness.

There are prepackaged products that are overrated, of course, by people that have never had better. But a *DISH* is only as good as the person preparing it.

Barbeque is overrated. Traditional restaurants in the South, hybrids on the west coast, they're all shit. They perfectly frame the weaknesses of American cuisine: their only saving grace is tradition. Subtle or hidden flavors are completely thrown out.

Not >>6027558, but a quick wikipedia check says that 72% of the US population identifies as white alone. Mixed race passing as white could be added to that. "As of 2011, about 250 million Americans live in or around urban areas. That means more than three-quarters of the U.S. population shares just about three percent of the U.S. land area." So about 80% if you take 250 million divided by the 312 million total population.

So the numbers aren't coming out of anyone's ass. Assuming everyone that is rural is also poor, however, is an ass based assumption. Based on the fact that it was an assumption pulled from your ass.

I think the disconnect here, is that you probably don't use social media or expose yourself to consumer products du jour, whatever those may be.

Bacon was most definitely a "meme" of sorts in the sense that there was surge in popularity. Something people professed to like for the sake of social capital really. Take the multitude of bacon related content and products of two years ago, and post them on social media in 5 years? People would think it's odd.

You seem to have a short memory. People into the Atkins diet were posting bacon related content (often with Simpsons references from a 1995 episode) in 2000. When Atkins died this shit calmed down for a while. Then artisan bacon became a thing in NYC restaurants around 2007. Like, a slab of bacon from some small producer who did their own curing as an appetizer for $8. I'm sure it was exciting 3-5 years later when this hit the local gastropub in Podunk. But the cycles of people getting excited about bacon are pretty tight. Seems like it happens every 5-7 years. So five years from now I wouldn't find it the least bit odd if it seemed like everybody was talking about bacon again.

I don't, I've been there many, many times and it's nice. It is funny to see the NY elitism though.

I live in a major city. Funny to see how much you internalize discussions on 4chan though.

This board really needs a moderator and some rules. Unless we're talking about fucking blood-sausage or coagulated blood in SE Asian stews then calling red meat or runoff from burst muscle tissue "blood" should warrant a warning and then a ban.

Tired of fucking hearing both trolling and ignorance.

Crabs are layouts and bounds better than lobster imo. Lobster's too greasy for me.
Also, more expensive than lobster

Humor me then, what makes the Korean grease+salt flavor profile so great? Pretty much everything that's good about Korean barbecue applies just as well to American, Chinese, Mexican, or any other style of well-prepared grilled meat.

And to reiterate, I don't dislike Korean barbecue. I just don't understand why people seem to cream their pants at the mere mention of it.
