Is steak actually still a big thing? Last time I had a steak must have been over 7 years ago when my mom/stepdad would make dinner. It's not like we ever had shit steaks (or top steaks for that matter) but I don't see the appeal.

Steaks are pretty pleb if you ask me. Firstly they're typically beef. Secondly there is minimal anything done to the slab of meat.

Steak is the top pleb food

Steaks are just average pub food. Good for filling a spot, tastes decent enough but nothing amazing.

I feel like you haven't had a decent quality steak that was cooked in a proper way.

The texture and taste of a good steak is fucking amazing, and the simplicity of beef with staple seasonings, cooked in a bit of fat is a mouthwatering idea to me.

Same, when it's done right steak is absolutely fantastic. The old salt + pepper route is a bit bland, but when you get creative and find an awesome marinade it's perfection. Steak does need a side of something to round it out though, like mash or garlic bread

I am. I mean steak is OK at best. It's nothing to go wild over. Beef is the shittiest of all meats. Salmon steaks are better.

If we wanna get into BBQ food then I think steak is an appropriate dish. But if I were at a bbq I'd be taking ribs or chicken over the cow unless the steak was the bbq's special. No reason to think steak is special.

So many steak threads on /ck/ you'd think it's the pinnacle of all food

Probably this the majority of the time. I've had a few steaks with good flavour and amazing texture but to get that texture in the uncooked meat you end up paying with your body. it's not worth the price when you can get chicken breats which will have good texture unless you fuck up cooking them

OP I doubt you have ever had a quality steak in your life, which is what you're basing your opinion on. If you had ever had a steak nicer than the one for $19.99 at Outback you would know how good they are.

I hate to be a dick but a great steak is just that, great. Go to a nice butcher shop and get a nice NY Strip that costs 20 bucks a pound. Go home, coat that shit in a bit of extra virigin olive oil, sprinkle with sea salt and cracked pepper. Let that shit out on your counter top for 20 minutes.

Throw that shit on your grill that has been heating to max heat for 10 minutes. 7 Minutes per side or so.

Eat that shit medium rare.

Maybe the problem you are having is that your country has shit meat? Or you buy poor quality meat and thus think it's nothing to write home about?

A good piece of beef is pretty much the best food there is. Just salt and pepper.

If you need any form of sauce. Anything at all, then chances are you are not eating good beef.

Protip: there is no good meat in the united states of america. The shit you consider beef there is just sponge with a packet of beef flavoring from an off-brand ramen.

And I'm not even trying to be insulting. It's just reality. If a murikan ever saw the light, they'd agree, but most won't. And that's perfectly fine by me.

>

Eat that shit medium rare.

You could have put that in the same paragraph and it wouldn't have seemed so hilariously fedoric.

Also, canola oil for pre-cooking. EVOO will just burn.

Finally, not op, but I only ever get USDA prime dry aged, quite a bit more than $20/lb where I live considering that quality skirt costs about $19/lb and it's not dry aged or prime, and I still don't get the fapping over steak that I see around here.

It's just that portionfags and >muh munnysworth fags and people who get intimidated by words they might not have seen before are the more comfortable in a steakhouse than anywhere else when they want to have a fancy dinner out. All the wines have easy to say names like "screaming eagle" and "B.V." instead of that weird french shit like "shombol mooseenie" and "shaassan montrashay". So needless to say, the steakhouse experience gives people like this an opportunity to be fancy together, without being challenged too much.

Canola oil will "burn" too on a 500 degree grill too. There is no cooking oil that won't burn at that temperature. You want some kind of char anyway.

Not sure where you live, but where I am you should get Prime NY Strip for as low as $18/lb. Not dry aged though, but I don't mind because I don't enjoy dry aged steaks as much.

Thomas Keller recommends canola oil for some recipes. Are you smarter than Thomas Keller?

Prime dry aged NY Strip is around $26-28/lb.

I mean I don't really care, use peanut or grapeseed oil if you want, but I think you're just getting butthurt over #gmo #trashfood. Which is fine, I get it, but overrated is hardly the right criticism.

Also I should add that I do like steak. I live next to a small, family owned cattle farm that uses minimal medicine and biotics on their cattle, and they openly graze on grains. I bought some porterhouse steaks from them a couple years back from a coe they slaughtered for personal use. I dry aged the steak for 4 days with salt and pepper, and seared on a natural chunk charcoal/hickory grill and topped with lemon juice.

Was the best steak I ever had, but I never sit around in the afternoon and get hit with a craving like "damn I wish I had a steak."

I have literally never seen anyone make a health claim about canola oil in particular, except maybe a monsanto press release that I might have read for humor value.

People make health claims about high smoke point oils because that's what medical experts recommend. You will see the same claims about peanut oil, apricot kernel oil, and rice bran oil. Some of which are rather expensive.

If you don't want to support GMO, that is a whole other issue.

As opposed to all those other oils that just magically get shat out of the plant? Most highly refined oils involve some kind of chemical process. I can, right now, walk down to the corner store and pick up a bottle of "pure 100% greek olive oil" that is hexane refined.

Stop cherry picking just because you don't like the name. Is it an MRA thing? You're mad that it's not called rape? RAPE RAPE RAPE RAPE RAPE. You happy now?

you're suggesting that beef is 'pleb', which isn't true, and that the more you do to the piece of meat the higher it is elevated.

this goes against one of the basic tenets of fine dining - that you should take quality ingredients and treat them simply and with care.
