Not poor family, actually not at all. Just... traditional. My family didn't start earning money until later on when my mom went private and starter reaping in on her long career.

I've lived off "swedish sausagedish", whatever that is called in English. And a lot of mystery stews, where my mom just threw together whatever was in the fridge. Usually ended up great. Funny part is, despite the primitive and cheap dishes, my mom always bought great ingredients, expensive meat and bio veggies and such.

I think it's a big mistake to say something is cheap because "a can is $1". 1 can of the cheapest tuna in Sweden, "Eldorado", is $5,5/lbs, and that is the same price as low fat, organic Swedish mince (Irish/German meat is a lot cheaper than Swedish meat).

Many think noodles are cheap, but where I come from, communist Sweden, instant ramen cost $2,38/lbs while 100% durum wheat pasta costs $0,48/lbs (converted from Swedish krona/kilo). That is 5 times higher.

I've been counting the price of the ingredients when cooking and often the up mark on pre made stuff is 200-300%, sometimes less but often more. Sure, time is money, but an 11.000 calorie lasagna for $20 will keep me full longer than 14 McD cheeseburgers will do (they cost ~$1.38/each in Sweden).

My mother is a retard and didn't understand how to budget anything. Every once in a while she would cook but most of the time it was up to me or my older sister to cook for us five kids. We were pretty young so we just did lots of hot dogs, ramen, pasta with butter, mac and cheese or anything else we could get our hands on and throw in a pot on the stove. It's weird... I've been browsing /ck/ for a while now and am I decent chef myself. I eat homecooked quality meals alot and can pick out good quality meals when I eat out. All our meals back then were basic. We would usually have some sort of meat, like a chuck roast or something. Some gravy, mashed potatoes, and a side of veggies. If you were lucky you got to have a slice of fresh bread and some butter to go with it. They were small plates and no one had a second serving except the old man. School lunch was free because i was poor. Never had junkfood or snacks, which meant going out for icecream was a very special occasion i looked forward to. My grandparents on my father's side were very poor throughout their lives. Grandma stayed at home, Grandpa worked a bad-paying job because of loyalty to his friend he was in the Army with in WW2. Grandma was always pissed off about how that friend underpaid Grandpa. They still managed to own a nice house and keep plenty of food on the table, including a lot of homegrown vegetables from the garden.

On the other hand, they did all this when it was still possible to raise a family on one income in the U.S. Nowadays, they'd starve.

One of their corned beef packages had a notice stuck to it that it was 23% injected saline "for flavor". That's in addition to the brine and seasonings that are packed around the slab of beef.

Wal-Mart chicken was injected with around 15-18% if I recall correctly.

Just not worth it -- "save" ten cents, get 15-25% water. Yay.

Same with most of the sauces, cleaning supplies, and so on, too.

No you really can't. That said, when I was away at college I ate turkey sandwiches for lunch every day of the week for $7 a week. A pound of pre-packaged Turkey was $3 and bread was $2. At the beginning of each month I bought a pound of cheese for $3 that would last me the whole month. Mustard and mayo lasted me 6 months or so. You just have to know how to be a savvy shopper and learn how to find and use coupons. This is a skill that most people sorely lack so they end up spending more than they need to eating fast food and freezer crap all the time.

When we lived in California it was a diet of Dept. of Agriculture food commodities- don't know if many of you ever experienced the 5 lb block of "cheese" or the assorted canned goods like 5 lb od green tins of precooked bacon. Hell we thought we were doing good when Dad got a big check and could take us to Roundtable or Burger King. Of course we used to do big ass pots of beans and hammy's and when fishing season was upon us we would eat tons of steelhead and rainbow trout.
When we moved to Washington that was when things got real. We ate crab, salmon and pretty much any kind of game we could. I swore I'd never eat another trout ever again but sometimes I miss that stuff.
Also- boiled hot dogs, mac and cheese and Dennison's chili. Fuck yeah, childhood.
