I went through a phase where I was a vegetarian to impress a girl and annoy my mum, and during that dark year, I ate hot dogs with everything but the dog - loads of fried onions, kethcup, mustard whatever. They were honestly just as good. These days unless the hot dog is actually a good sossie, I sometimes think they kind of spoil it with that odd texture they sometimes have.

Ketchup is easy to hate because it overrides a vast majority of other flavors.

But as far as sauces go, it's far from the first flavor to stomp all over its food. It is, however, one of the more interesting-textured sweet sauces, and the only one that has really 'hooked' in America. People in America don't really like sweet sauces too much - Chinese Sweet and Sour, and Ketchup, tend to be the exceptions.
